The 2017 NBA Playoffs
The 2017 NBA Playoffs was the postseason tournament of the National Basketball Association’s 2016-17 season. The playoffs began on April 15, 2017 and ended on June 12, 2017, with the Golden State Warriors defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers 4–1 in the NBA Finals.
The First Round
The first round of the 2017 NBA Playoffs began on April 15 and ended on April 30. All rounds are best-of-seven.
The first round featured eight match-ups, with the four winners advancing to the second round, and the losers going home. The higher seed played host for games one, two, five and seven (if necessary); while the lower seed hosted games three and four (if necessary). The Opening Round was structured so that division rivals could not meet in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
The Conference Semifinals
In the Conference Semifinals, the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers will battle in the East, while the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs battle in the West.
In the East, the top-seeded Celtics are taking on the eighth-seeded Cavaliers. The Celtics finished the regular season with the best record in the NBA at 53-29. The Cavaliers finished the regular season with a record of 50-32, good for fourth place in the conference.
The Celtics won three of four games against the Cavaliers during the regular season, but that doesn’t mean that this will be an easy series for them. The Cavaliers have proved time and time again that they are a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs, and they will be looking to make a statement in this series.
In the West, the second-seeded Rockets are taking on the seventh-seeded Spurs. The Rockets finished the regular season with a record of 55-27, while the Spurs finished with a record of 47-35.
The Rockets won all four games against the Spurs during the regular season, but that doesn’t mean that this will be an easy series for them. The Spurs are a dangerous team in the playoffs, and they will be looking to make things tough for Houston.
The Conference Finals
In the Conference Finals, the Warriors faced the Spurs and the Cavaliers took on the Celtics. The Warriors won their series 4-0, while the Cavaliers emerged victorious with a 4-1 victory over the Celtics.
This set up a rematch of last year’s Finals in which the Cavaliers came back from a 3-1 deficit to win their first ever championship. The Warriors will be looking to take revenge and win their second title in three years, while the Cavaliers will be aiming to repeat as champions.

The Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors defeated the defending NBA champion and Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers, four games to one. This was also golden state’s second championship in three years
Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving was named Most Valuable Player of the Finals.
Game 2
The 2017 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s 2016–17 season and conclusion of the 2017 playoffs. The best-of-seven playoff was contested between the defending NBA champions and Western Conference champions, Golden State Warriors, and the Eastern Conference champions, Cleveland Cavaliers. This Finals was notable because it was the third meeting in a row between these two teams, marking the first time in NBA history that this had happened. These two teams had also met in 2015 and 2016.
The Warriors, who had assembled one of the best starting lineups in NBA history, were favored to win the series. The Cavaliers won game 1 by a score of 113–91, but the Warriors bounced back to win game 2 by a score of 132–113. The series then shifted to Cleveland, where the Cavaliers won game 3 by a score of 120–108. The Warriors responded by winning games 4 and 5 by scores of 112–108 and 118–113 respectively to take a 3–2 lead in the series. In game 6, Kevin Durant hit a three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining to give the Warriors a 114–113 lead. The Cavaliers then went on to lose by a score of 115–101, thus resulting in a 4–2 series victory for Golden State.
This was Golden State’s second consecutive title and fifth overall; it was also their second consecutive Finals loss for Cleveland. Kevin Durant was named Finals MVP for averaging 35.2 points per game over the course of the series, his first such award.[1][2]
Game 3
The third game of the 2017 NBA Finals was played on June 7, 2017, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. The Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 118–113 to take a 3–0 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Cavaliers won the first quarter 28–23, but were outscored 36–20 in the second quarter to trail by 14 points at halftime. LeBron James scored 11 points in the third quarter to help the Cavaliers reduce their deficit to four points entering the final quarter. Durant scored eight points in a row for the Warriors midway through the fourth quarter to put them ahead 106–100 with 4:39 remaining. Irving subsequently made a three-pointer, and after James made a jumper, Durant hit another jumper to put the Warriors up 110–105 with 1:33 left. James then made two free throws and Irving made another three-pointer, but Iguodala answered with a layup that put Golden State up 112–110 with 45 seconds remaining. After James made two more free throws, Durant hit a pull-up jumper over James to give the Warriors a 114–112 lead with 35 seconds left. After Irving made one of two free throws, Durant was fouled and made both of his free throws to extend the Warriors’ lead to 116–113 with 32 seconds remaining. James missed a dunk attempt, and Thompson secured the rebound and was fouled. He made both free throws with 17 seconds left for a 118–113 lead that proved to be enough for Golden State as they held on for win after Irving’s three-point attempt bounced off of the rim as time expired.
Durant scored 31 points on 11-of-22 shooting and added eight rebounds and four assists while Thompson had 30 points on 12-of-22 shooting and also had six rebounds and four assists as they became only second teammates in NBA history to score 30 or more points each while shooting over 50 percent from field goal range in an NBA Finals game since Shaquille O’Neal (36 points) and Kobe Bryant ( 34) did so for Los Angeles Lakers against Indiana Pacers in Game 4 of 2000 NBA Finals.[2][3] Kyrie Irving led Cleveland with 40 points on 14-of-24 shooting including six three-pointers along with five assists but turned ball over seven times while Kevin Love had 23 points and 10 rebounds.[4] With this loss, Cleveland became only second team after 2007 San Antonio Spurs[5] who failed to win any game despite holding two double digit leads at any point during an NBA Finals game.[6]
Game 4
The 2017 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s 2016-17 season and conclusion of the season’s playoffs. This marked the third consecutive matchup of these two teams in the Finals, after which they met in back-to-back NBA Finals in 2015 and 2016. Both teams entered the series holding a 3–1 advantage over each other in the previous three NBA Finals; the Warriors won in 2015, while the Cavaliers won in 2016.

Game 5
For the first time in NBA history, two teams met in the Finals for a third consecutive year. The Cavaliers entered the series having won 14 of their last 15 playoff games against the Warriors dating back to Game 5 of the 2015 Finals, while Golden State had won eight straight playoff games against Cleveland dating back to Game 4 of the 2016 Finals. Despite this, Golden State opened the series as heavy favorites.
The Cavaliers won Game 5 by a score of 112–97 to take a 3–2 lead in the series. James scored 35 points and became the first player in NBA history to score 35 or more points in each game of an NBA Finals series. Irving scored 30 points, becoming the second player ever to score at least 30 points in each game of an NBA Finals series, joining Shaquille O’Neal (2000). Durant was held to 20 points on 8-for-22 shooting, his lowest point total and field goal percentage of the series.

With the win, the Warriors added to their playoff run which began in 2013 and featured trips to the NBA Finals in each of those seasons. They joined the Boston Celtics (1959–66) and Los Angeles Lakers (1982–85) as the only teams in NBA history to make three consecutive trips to the NBA Finals. The Cavaliers had been attempting to become the first team since the Boston Celtics in 1969 to repeat as champions.
