The Lightning were founded in 1992 as an expansion team by Phil Esposito and his brother Tony, and are currently owned by Jeffrey Vinik. They are also one of two teams to win all four major North American professional sports championships (the 2004 Stanley Cup, the 2005 Super Bowl XLIII with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the 2008 World Series with Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays, and the 2020 NBA Finals with the NBA’s Miami Heat), along with the Pittsburgh Penguins who accomplished this feat twice (in 2009 and 2016).

The team was founded during the 1967 NHL expansion as the Minnesota North Stars, based in Bloomington, Minnesota. The franchise relocated to Dallas for the 1993–94 NHL season. The Stars played their home games at American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas.

The Stars have won eight division titles in 31 seasons since relocating to Dallas, two Presidents’ Trophies as the top regular season team in the league, the 1999 Stanley Cup as Western Conference champions, and made an appearance in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals.

The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado. They are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Avalanche were founded in Quebec City, Quebec, as the Quebec Nordiques in 1972. The franchise moved to Denver in 1995 and was renamed as the Colorado Avalanche. The Nordiques were one of the World Hockey Association’s original teams and became one of four NHL franchises to join the NHL when it merged with the WHA in 1979.

The Avalanche have won nine division titles and qualified for the playoffs in each of their first 21 seasons in Denver, tied for the longest streak by any professional sports team from any of the four major North American leagues (NHL, MLB, NBA, NFL). As a result, they are tied for third overall for winningest professional sports team during that span behind only San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Blackhawks. Between 1996 and 2013, they had eleven consecutive seasons Qualifying for playoffs which is also an NHL record. In their first season after changing their name from “Quebec Nordiques” to “Colorado Avalanche”, they surprisingly won their first Stanley Cup championship in their inaugural season before being swept by Detroit Red Wings who were defending champions at that time in the Western Conference Finals.
