Introduction

In professional tennis, a Grand Slam tournament is one of the four most important annual tennis events. They comprise the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. The tournaments are operated by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), and each event is held over two weeks in late January/early February (Australian Open), late May/early June (French Open), late June/early July (Wimbledon) and early September/late August (US Open).

The Championships, Wimbledon

The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is widely regarded as the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts. Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hardcourt in 1988, Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass. The tournament takes place two weeks in late June and early July, culminating with a Gentlemen’s Singles final which is always held on the second Sunday of July. Five major events are each contested over three sets; a player who loses a set may elect to start the next set from 0–0 (referred to as “a set down”). A tie-break game (played as seven points deciding game) is used if a set score reaches 6–6 in games; this has occurred only twice since 1979. A match consists of up to five sets for men and three sets for women[1] (except mixed doubles matches which consist of two sets). The winner of a match must win by two clear games; if scores are level at any point between 2–2 and 5–5 a player may elect to serve to decide that game. If his/her opponent then fails to win that game that player wins that set 7–5 or 5–7 or by any other margin specified in these rules but losing a set by less than two games clear does not reduce his opponent’s advantage or give him any new opportunity.
