Federer’s performance this season
Roger Federer’s 2019 season began at the Hopman Cup, where he was representing Switzerland for the seventeenth consecutive time. In his first round-robin match, he faced Germany’s Alexander Zverev and lost in straight sets. This was followed by a win over Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie. In his last round-robin match, Federer faced Australia’s Alex de Minaur and won in straight sets. Federer then defeated Britain’s Dan Evans in the semifinals. In the final, Federer faced Germany’s Sascha Zverev and won in three sets to claim his record-extending tenth title at the Hopman Cup.
Federer then competed at the Australian Open. In his firstround match, he defeated Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in straight sets. This was followed by a win over France’s Lucas Pouille in four sets. In the third round, Federer defeated American Steve Johnson in straight setsto set up a rematch of his 2018 semifinal against Japan’s Kei Nishikori, which he won in four sets. In the quarterfinals, Federer downed defending champion Marin Čilić in straight sets to reach his thirteenth semifinal at the Australian Open, where he narrowly defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in five sets to reach his record-extending twenty-eighth Grand Slam final. There, he faced longtime rival Rafael Nadal for a record-extending thirty-second time (including all finals), with Nadal winning in five sets to claim his second title at Melbourne Park and deny Federer a record seventh Australian Open title.
Following his run to the final at Melbourne, Federer next competed at Indian Wells Masters, where he received a bye into the second round due to being seeded third. There, he defeated German Philipp Kohlschreiber
in three sets before trouncing American Taylor Fritz in straight sets to reach the semifinals for a record fifteenth time at this tournament (breaking Jimmy Connors’ all-time mark). He then eased past Dutch player tall Kerkhove
in straight setsto reach final for an astounding twelfth time (tying Novak Djokovic for second place on the all-time list behind only Connors’ thirteen appearances). However, Canadian Milos Raonic retired early into their championship match due to injury after losing the opening set; as such official scoreline reads 6–1 before it ended with Raonic being unable to continue playing any longer and had to concede defeat while giving up the victory and trophy to Federer as a result (allowing him return back atop of ATP rankings again). Consequently it was Federer’s record 103rd tour title (breaking Ivan Lendl’s all-time mark that had been stood since 1987) and fourth Indian Wells crown overall (tying him with Djokovic for second place on tournament’s all-time list behind only Connors’ five titles).
