Serena Williams
Serena Williams won her record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Victoria Azarenka at the 2020 US Open. Williams took just over an hour and a half to seal her straight-sets triumph and move level with Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 major singles titles.
Williams’ Record
Serena Williams has been one of the most dominant forces in women’s tennis over the past two decades. She has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most of any player in the Open Era, and her record includes seven Wimbledon singles crowns, six Australian Open titles, and three US Open championships.
In addition to her Grand Slam wins, Williams has also been successful in other prestigious tournaments. She is a five-time singles champion at the season-ending WTA Tour Championships, and she has also captured two Olympic gold medals in singles play.
Williams’ Performance in the Open
In the Open, Williams defeated her sister Venus in the quarterfinals, then unseeded Elina Svitolina in the semifinals, to reach the final where she faced unseeded Bianca Andreescu. With a win in the final, Serena Williams would have achieved a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title (and eighth US Open title), as well as overtaking Margaret Court for the all-time record of most major singles titles won in the Open Era. However, she lost to Andreescu in straight sets, 6–3, 7–5.
Naomi Osaka
Japanese Tennis player Naomi Osaka has won her second consecutive US Open title, defeating Victoria Azarenka in straight sets in the final. This is Osaka’s fourth Grand Slam title, and she is now the reigning champion at all four Slams.
Osaka’s Record
Naomi Osaka became the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title when she defeated Serena Williams in the 2018 US Open final, 6–2, 6–4. In so doing, she also became the first unseeded player to win the tournament since 1934. Prior to her US Open victory, Osaka had never been beyond the third round of a major tournament.
At the 2019 Australian Open, Osaka defeated Petra Kvitová in the final to claim her second consecutive Grand Slam title. This made her the first woman since Serena Williams in 2015 to win back-to-back majors, as well as the first Asian player of either gender to ever achieve this feat. She also became only the fourth woman in tennis history to win her first four Grand Slam finals, and only the second player (after Roger Federer) to achieve this feat since 2008.
