Who Won The World Series In Baseball?
The World Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB). The winner of the World Series receives the Commissioner’s Trophy.
The Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox have won the World Series in baseball! This is their fourth title in the last fourteen years. The Sox have been on a roll lately, and their fans are ecstatic. This win was especially sweet because they beat their arch-rivals, the New York Yankees, in the process.
The Series
The Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB) in North America, contested since 1903 between the American League (AL) champion team and the National League (NL) champion team. The winner of the Series wins the Commissioner’s Trophy. The Series ends in late October, right after the end of MLB’s regular season.
In 1903, the first modern World Series was played between the Boston Americans of the AL and the Pittsburgh Pirates of the NL. Although prior championships had been decided by pre-arranged matchups between specific leagues or by prior arrangement between individual clubs, this was done on a much more informal basis. Best-of-sevengames series were beginning to become common among well-off teams by this time; wealthy owners such as Boston owner Henry Watkins Benson could afford to risk their entire season’s possible winnings (and gate receipts) on one contest.
The Team
The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won eight World Series championships and have played in thirteen. Founded in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the Red Sox’ home ballpark has been Fenway Park since 1912. The “Red Sox” name was chosen by the team owner, John I. Taylor, circa 1908, following the lead of previous teams that had been known as the “Boston Red Stockings”, including the forerunner of the Atlanta Braves.
The Red Sox are consistently one of the top MLB teams, winning their divisional title an MLB-record nine times consecutively from 2003 to 2011, and claiming 10 AL pennants since 1903 overall. They are third in MLB history in postseason appearances behind only the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals, and second in AL history behind only those same Yankees. In addition, Boston has played more games against the Yankees than any other franchise has played against another franchise since 1903; their longtime rivalry with New York is considered one of the best rivalries in all of sports.
The St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals are an American professional baseball team based in St. Louis, Missouri. The Cardinals compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division.
