The title was introduced in 1963 by the then-World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), after the promotion seceded from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). It is unknown who created the title, with multiple people taking credit, including WWF owner Vince McMahon and former NWA world heavyweight champion Pat O’Connor. Since its inception, the title has undergone many name changes due to company name changes and ownership changes. From its inception until 2001, it was promoted as WWE’s sole primary championship. An additional world title, the WCW Championship, was added after the then-World Championship Wrestling (WCW) seceded from NWA in 1991. The ECW World Heavyweight Championship was added in 2006 following Extreme Championship Wrestling’s (ECW) purchase by WWE and its subsequent incorporation into the company; this title eventually became exclusive to WWE’s revived ECW brand until its closure in 2010 due to declining viewership rates for its televisions show—resulting in it being deactivated that same year. A fifth world title—the World Heavyweight Championship—was established for WWE’s main roster in 2002 when RAW went live following the conclusion of that year’s InVasion storyline pay-per-view (PPV); this title became exclusive to predecessor brand SmackDown following a draft lottery later that year before both it and RAW once again became co-branded as a result of another draft lottery held in 2011 as well as unifying both brands’ respective rosters following said draft lottery; this title eventually became exclusive to SmackDown yet again when both brands split their respective rosters back up into separate entities during mid-2016 ahead of that summer’s brand extension draft lottery before finally returned to being a co-branded championship once again starting at Survivor Series later that year following yet another draft lottery held during SmackDown LIVE’s 1000th episode which saw it trade places with then now-Universal Champion Brock Lesnar who had been drafted to RAW during 2016’s aforementioned brand extension draft. As a result of Lesnar failing to defend said championship at least once within a 30-day period per WWE rules which led to said championship being declared vacant, Lesnar was instead moved back to RAW as part of said rules while said vacant championship was immediately put up for grabs at Crown Jewel where then now former-WWE Champion AJ Styles defeated then now former-Universal Champion Brock Lesnar and The Miz in a triple threat match to win said vacant championship—thus unifying both brands’ respective world championships and making Styles once again a double champion as he simultaneously held both said titles up until he lost one of them back to Lesnar at Survivor Series later that same year thus making him no longer able be considered a double champion; Lesnar would go on retain said championships until WrestleMania 35 where he finally lost said championships to then now new Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey and then new Universal Champion Seth Rollins respectively in separate matches thus splitting up said championships between determine genders—with Rousey becoming WrestleMania 35’s first ever women’s headliner match while Rollins himself also made history by defeating Lesnar via pinning him not only making him only one of four men along with Brock himself along with Goldberg and Batista who have managed not just pin but defeat Brock Lesnar via pinning him but also making Rollins only one out four men who have managed doing so more than once with Goldberg being able do so twice while Batista and Rollins himself have managed doing so three times each—making WrestleMania 35 itself become historic as well not just because it became WrestleMania 35 but also because WrestleMania itself became historic by crowning not one but two new world champions on two different occasions respectively in addition crowning two new grand slam champions respectively as well.
