Wawrinka thus became the first Swiss player to win a Grand Slam singles title since Roger Federer won the Wimbledon Championships in 2003. It was also Wawrinka’s first appearance in a Grand Slam final.

Overview

Stanislas Wawrinka (born 28 March 1985) is a Swiss professional tennis player. He reached a career-high ATP ranking of world No. 3 in 2014 and 2015, making him the highest-ranked Swiss player in history. Wawrinka’s breakthrough came in 2014 when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters to become only the second man after Novak Djokovic to beat the world No. 1 and 2 players (Nadal and Roger Federer respectively) back-to-back at tour-level, en route to his maiden Masters 1000 title. A month later, he followed this up by winning his first French Open title, defeating Djokovic in the quarterfinals and Nadal in the final. In doing so, Wawrinka became only the eighth man since 1927 to win both a Major tournament and a Master’s tournament on clay in the same year, thus completing a “Career Golden Slam”, as well as becoming only one of thirteen men to have won all four Majors tennis titles (a “Grand Slam”). Furthermore, by defeating Djokovic in Paris, he prevented Djokovic from achieving a Career Grand Slam at that time as well (only Pete Sampras had won all four Majors prior to achieving a Career Grand Slam).

Wawrinka then completed his second “Career Golden Slam” by winning both Wimbledon and an Olympic gold medal in doubles with Federer that year. In September 2009, Stanislas achieved his then career-high singles ATP ranking of world No. 25. After several years of struggles with injuries and erratic form between 2010 and 2013, Wawrinka reemerged at the beginning of 2014 with more consistent results; consequently climbing back up into the top 10 rankings by June 2014 for the first time since April 2010. Wawrinka has been more successful than Roger Federer before reaching his thirtieth birthday; having won three Major titles (one more than Federer), as well as having defeated both Nadal and Djokovic more times at Major tournaments than Federer had managed during his twenties.

Career

Wawrinka has been a professional tennis player since 2000. He has won three Grand Slam singles titles, including the 2014 US Open, and his career-high ATP singles ranking is No. 3, which he achieved on January 27, 2014. He became the Swiss No. 1 tennis player on August 18, 2014, after Roger Federer dropped to second in the rankings.

In doubles, Wawrinka has reached twelve finals with a record of 7 wins and 5 losses (5–5 at Grand Slams), winning titles at Wimbledon in 2014 and 2015 and the French Open in 2015. He has also won an Olympic Gold medal in doubles with compatriot Federer at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
