World Baseball Classic

The World Baseball Classic (WBC) is an international professional baseball tournament sanctioned from 2006 onwards by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF), baseball’s worldwide governing body. finished on March 22, 2013, with the Dominican Republic defeating Puerto Rico in the final. The Dominican Republic was the first nation to win the WBC twice, after winning the 2013 tournament.

World Baseball Classic 2017

The 2017 World Baseball Classic was an international baseball tournament contested by 16 national teams, primarily featuring professional players from Major League Baseball (MLB). It was the fourth edition of the WBC, following the two previous tournaments, held in 2006 and 2009. The tournament took place in March 2017, and ended on March 22.

Pool play of the tournament began on March 6, included 39 games (six per pool), and ended on March 14. A total of 28 teams qualified for the tournament. Two from each pool advanced to a single-elimination second round to decide each pool winner; these second round games were also played between March 15 and 20.

One team from each pool advanced to semi-final games, played between March 21 and 22 for a total of four teams still alive in the tournament. In the final game on Sunday, March 22, Puerto Rico defeated the Netherlands by a score of 4–3 to win their first World Baseball Classic title.

The 2013 World Baseball Classic was won by the Dominican Republic, who defeated Puerto Rico in the final. The Dominican Republic became the first team to win the World Baseball Classic twice, having previously won in 2013.

Netherlands

The Netherlands has a long baseball tradition dating back to the 19th century. The first professional baseball league in Europe was founded in 1922, and the Dutch national team won the Baseball World Cup in 1938. The Netherlands has won 7 European Championships and 2 Intercontinental Cups.

In 2009, the Netherlands qualified for the World Baseball Classic for the first time ever. They finished 2nd in their pool behind the Dominican Republic, but failed to advance to the second round. In 2013, they again qualified for the WBC and again finished 2nd in their pool behind the Dominican Republic. However, they did advance to the second round this time, but lost to eventual champions Japan.

In 2017, the Netherlands qualified for the WBC for the third time. They finished first in their pool with a perfect 3-0 record, defeating Cuba, Chinese Taipei, and Israel. They then went on to defeat Venezuela in the second round and Soraichi Taniguchi hit a walk-off homerun in extra innings against Japan to give them a spot in the championship game against Puerto Rico.

In the championship game, Puerto Rico took an early lead and never looked back as they went on to win 8-3. The Netherlands received tremendous support from home fans throughout the tournament and had an incredible run.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic finished as the runner-up in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. The Dominican Republic has a rich baseball tradition and is one of the most successful countries in the tournament, with four appearances in the semifinals.

Venezuela

Venezuela has a long history of baseball and has been a member of the World Baseball Classic since its inaugural tournament in 2006. The team has never won the WBC, but they have come close, finishing as the runner-up in both the 2009 and 2017 tournaments.

Venezuela’s best performance came in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, where they went undefeated in the first round and finished as the runner-up to Japan. The team was led by stars like Miguel Cabrera, Jose Altuve, and Felix Hernandez, and they proved to be a tough out for any team they faced.

Despite their recent success, Venezuela has never won a World Baseball Classic title. They will look to change that in the 2021 tournament, when they will once again be one of the favorites to contend for the title.
