How the NFL Works

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. The NFL is the highest level of professional football in the United States. This section will give you an in-depth look at how the NFL works.

The NFL’s regular season

The NFL regular season typically runs from the last week of September to the first week of December, with each team playing 16 games. The playoffs then follow, consisting of six teams from each conference — four division winners and two wild-card teams. The playoffs culminate in the Super Bowl, which is typically held in early February.

The NFL’s playoffs

The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the playoffs. A seeded team plays a wild card team (4 teams total), and the winners of those two matchups play each other. The winners of those games advance to the next weekend, when they play the top two seeds in their respective conferences in the divisional round. The divisional round winners then advance to the conference championships, with the winners of those games meeting in the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is the biggest and most important American football game of the year. It is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL). The game is played between the winning team from the NFL’s American Football Conference (AFC) and the winning team from the National Football Conference (NFC). The winner of the Super Bowl receives the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which is named after legendary Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi. The trophy is made of sterling silver and comes in three different sizes: one for the winning team, one for display at the NFL’s headquarters, and one for display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967. It was held at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in California. The AFL’s champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, played against the NFL’s champions, the Green Bay Packers. The Packers won by a score of 35-10. Since then, there have been 50 more Super Bowls.

The most recent Super Bowl was Super Bowl LIV (54), which was played on February 2, 2020. The game was held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The AFC’s champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, played against NFC’s champions, the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs won by a score of 31-20.
