NHL Playoffs 2020
The NHL playoffs are upon us and it’s time to see who’s in and who’s out. The 2020 NHL playoffs will feature 24 teams, with the top 12 teams in each conference qualifying. This year’s playoffs will be held entirely in hub cities and will be played in August and September. Who’s your pick to win the Stanley Cup this year?
Who’s in?
The 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs is the playoff tournament of the National Hockey League. The playoffs began on August 1, 2020, and will end no later than October 4, 2020, with the Stanley Cup Finals.
The sixteen teams that qualified, eight from each conference based on regular season points percentage, are competing in a modified best-of-five game series for the first two rounds in Canadian cities Edmonton and Toronto. All games are taking place in one ” bubbles ” with no fans in attendance.
Who’s out?
As the NHL regular season winds down, the playoff picture is beginning to take shape.
16 teams will qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs: the top three teams in each division plus two wild-card teams in each conference, for a total of eight from the Eastern Conference and eight from the Western Conference.
The first and second rounds will be played within each conference, meaning there can be no crossover until the conference finals. The first two rounds are best-of-seven series; all subsequent rounds are best-of-seven.
The playoffs will begin on Tuesday, April 14.
Here is a look at who has clinched a spot and who is still fighting for their lives:
Who’s in?
The Tampa Bay Lightning have clinched the Presidents’ Trophy as the team with the NHL’s best regular-season record. They will enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the East.
Joining them as division winners are the Washington Capitals (Metropolitan), Boston Bruins (Atlantic) and Colorado Avalanche (Central).
From there, it’s a muddled mess in both conferences. In the East, it appears as though either the Philadelphia Flyers or Pittsburgh Penguins will claim one of the wild cards, while four teams –the Carolina Hurricanes, New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets and Florida Panthers — are within three points of each other vying for the other spot. In addition, any of those four could still win their division; none are more than four points back of first place in their respective divisions. It should be an exciting finish to say the least!
In the West, it’s a battle for survival with five teams within three points of each other vying for those final two playoff spots: The Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames and Arizona Coyotes (although Arizona would need some help to get in).
How did they make it?
