They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles team), moving to New York in 1903 and adopting the iconic “Yankees” name in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and Aaron Boone is their manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, their home games were played at Shea Stadium, which was also home to their crosstown rivals, baseball’s New York Mets until 2019. From 2009 to 2018, their home games have been played at new Yankee Stadium in an area adjacent to The Bronx Zoo.
The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships,[7] 40 American League pennants,[7] and lead all MLB franchises with 114 postseason appearances.[8][9] They also led MLB in semifinal appearances with 14 between 1978–1981 and again between 1994–1996; lost World Series appearances with five between 1921–1964; and won four consecutive World Series titles between 1996–1999—a feat accomplished only once before in Major League history: by their crosstown rivals, baseball’s New York Mets who accomplished it between 1969–1973.[10][11][12] Forty-one former Yankees players and eleven former managers are members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame,[13] including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra,[14] Whitey Ford,[15] and Roy White.[16][17] In pursuit of winning championships year after year, representing a global brand across all professional sports leagues as one of its most valuable assets,[18][19][20] front-office individuals for decades have made trades—sometimes lopsided ones—that have led critics to question both their commitment to winning on behalf of fans as well as loyalty to individual players following those trades.[21][22][23][24 NULL
