The Standings
Who’s leading the NFL? The current standings are:
The NFC
The NFC currently has two divisions with four teams each, and two wild card teams. The top four teams in the conference are the Dallas Cowboys, the Detroit Lions, the Green Bay Packers, and the Seattle Seahawks. The Cowboys are in first place in the NFC East with a record of 11-1. The Lions are in first place in the NFC North with a record of 9-4. The Packers are in second place in the NFC North with a record of 8-6. The Seahawks are in first place in the NFC West with a record of 9-4.
The AFC
As we approach the midway point of the NFL season, let’s take a look at how the AFC is shaping up.
In the AFC East, the New England Patriots are in first place with a 6-2 record. The Buffalo Bills are in second place with a 4-4 record, followed by the Miami Dolphins (2-6) and the New York Jets (1-7).
In the AFC North, the Baltimore Ravens are in first place with a 6-2 record. The Pittsburgh Steelers are in second place with a 5-3 record, followed by the Cleveland Browns (3-6) and the Cincinnati Bengals (0-9).
In the AFC South, the Houston Texans are in first place with a 6-3 record. The Indianapolis Colts are in second place with a 5-3 record, followed by the Tennessee Titans (4-5) and the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-8).
In AFC West, the Kansas City Chiefs are in first place with an 8-1 record. The Oakland Raiders are in second place with a 4-4 record, followed by the Los Angeles Chargers (4-6) and Denver Broncos (2-6).
The Teams
It’s no surprise that the New England Patriots are leading the NFL. They’ve been dominating the league for years. But who’s right behind them? The Los Angeles Rams are looking strong this year and are definitely a team to watch.
The New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.
The Patriots are also headquartered at Gillette Stadium. An original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in the 1970 merger of the two leagues. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971. The Patriots played their home games at Foxboro Stadium from 1971 to 2001, then moved to Gillette Stadium at the start of the 2002 season.
The Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers are a professional American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers compete in the National Football League as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference North division. It is the third-oldest franchise in the NFL, dating back to 1919, and is the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team based in the United States. Home games have been played at Lambeau Field since 1957.
The Packers are the last remaining team from the NFL’s inaugural season in 1920. Founded in 1919 by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun, the franchise traces its lineage to other semi-professional teams in Green Bay dating back to 1896. Between 1919 and 1920, the Packers competed against other semi-pro clubs from around Wisconsin and Michigan. They joined the American Professional Football Association, the forerunner of today’s NFL, in August 1920. The club then was awarded by APFA with membership into that season’s inaugural 1920 NFL season.
In 1921, the Packers were united with two other APFA teams—the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Giants—to form what is now known as the NFL’s Eastern Division; two additional teams were later added to form what is today known as the AFC East.
The Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are a professional American football team based in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The Cowboys compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. The team is headquartered in Frisco, Texas, and plays its home games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which opened for the 2009 season. The stadium took the place of the partially destroyed Texas Stadium, which served as the home of the Cowboys from 1971 through the 2008 season.
The Cowboys joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1960. The team’s national following might best be represented by its NFL record of consecutive sell-outs. The Cowboys’ streak of 190 consecutive sold-out regular and post-season games began in 2002. The franchise has made it to eight Super Bowls, tied with Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos for second most Super Bowl appearances in history behind New England Patriots’ ten appearances. This has also corresponded to eight NFC championships, most in the NFC.[8] They have won five of these Super Bowl appearances, tied with their fellow NFC rivals San Francisco 49ers; both are second to Pittsburgh’s record six Super Bowl championships. The Cowboys have 26 postseason appearances (third all time), tied with Pittsburgh and Denver but behind San Francisco’s 28 appearances.[9] As of 2019, they also became one of just two teams to win more than five division titles (the other being Green Bay Packers) since 1970 when divisions were realigned into their current configuration
The Leading Players
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. The leading players are the ones who have been playing at the top of their game and have set records.
Tom Brady
At 41, Brady is the oldest non-kicker or punter in the NFL, but age has done nothing to slow him down. He’s coming off one of his best seasons ever, leading the Patriots to a 13-3 record and throwing for 4,355 yards with 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Brady has led New England to nine Super Bowl appearances, winning five times.
Aaron Rodgers
AARON RODGERS, GREEN BAY PACKERS (4-2)
The Packers have been up and down this season, but when Rodgers is on, he’s still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Rodgers has thrown for 1,585 yards and 11 touchdowns with just three interceptions. He’s also been effective running the ball, rushing for 148 yards and three touchdowns. The Packers are currently second in the NFC North behind the Minnesota Vikings.
Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott is an American football quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Mississippi State University, where he was a two-time All-American and traded as a senior. He was selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he set numerous franchise and NFL rookie records, including passing for most touchdowns and fewest interceptions in a season.
