The history
The Stanley Cup is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. It is also one of the most revered trophies in all of sports. The Stanley Cup was first presented in 1892. It was donated by former Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley of Preston. The first winners of the Stanley Cup were the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club, which was also the first organized hockey team in Canada.
The original rules for the Stanley Cup stated that it was to be awarded to “the champion hockey team of the Dominion of Canada.” These rules were later amended to include teams from the United States. In its early years, the Stanley Cup was mostly competed for by amateur teams. In 1910, it became a professional trophy and has remained such ever since.
Although it has been competed for by teams from all over North America, the Stanley Cup has been won more times by Canadian teams than any other nation. As of 2020, Canadian teams have won the Stanley Cup a total of 24 times. The Montreal Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup a record-setting 24 times, which is almost double that of any other team.
