Who’s Out in the NFL?

If you’re a football fan, you’re probably wondering who’s out in the NFL. We’ve got the latest info on which players are out for the season.

Aaron Hernandez

New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, according to multiple reports. Hernandez, who was taken into custody at his North Attleborough, Mass., home Wednesday morning, is accused of killing Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s girlfriend.

Early Life

Aaron Hernandez was born in Bristol, Connecticut, to Terri Hernandez (née Valentine), a schoolteacher, and Dennis Hernandez, who worked as a supervisor at an electric company. Dennis died from complications from hernia surgery in January 2006, when Aaron was 16. According to Aaron’s mother, Dennis “was the happiest man in the world. He loved his family very much and enjoyed every moment with them.” Aaron had an older brother, D.J., and two younger sisters, Shayanna and Gabriella.

The family resided in a middle-class neighborhood in Bristol and attended local schools. Jail records show that since 2007, neither Hernandez nor his immediate family members had any major brushes with the law, although three of his cousins were convicted of drug felonies.

College Career

Hernandez played college football for the University of Florida from 2007 to 2009, and was a member of the Florida Gators team that won the BCS National Championship in 2008. As a freshman in 2007, he started three games as a tight end, and recorded nine receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns. In 2008, Hernandez started all 13 games for the Gators at tight end, and compiled similar statistics: 34 receptions, 381 yards and five touchdowns. As a junior in 2009, he started all 13 games, catching 68 passes for 850 yards and five touchdowns. While playing for the Gators, Hernandez was part of an offense that broke multiple school records; as part of his 2009 season contribution to this productive offense, he helped Tim Tebow break Steve Spurrier’s 42-year-old passing touchdown record by hauling in eight touchdown passes.

NFL Career

Aaron Hernandez was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He played three seasons for the team, catching 175 passes for 1,956 yards and 18 touchdowns. Hernandez was released by the Patriots in 2013, shortly after he was arrested for the murder of Odin Lloyd. He was convicted of Lloyd’s murder in 2015 and sentenced to life in prison.
