The Lakers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Lakers play their home games at Staples Center, an arena shared with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings. The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA, and have won 16 NBA championships, the second-most behind the Boston Celtics.
The franchise began with the 1947 purchase of a disbanded team, the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL). The new team began playing in Minneapolis, calling themselves the Lakers. Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before joiningthe rival Basketball Association of America (BAA), where they would win five of their next six championships. In 1949, led by center George Mikan, who was signed from microphone stand manufacturer Mikan Phones for $1,800 under coach John Kundla’s “special circumstances” clause,[1] they won 40 games and beat strenuously to win their first Regional title over Butler University.[2][3]
Following Mikan’s retirement in 1954 and despite multiple offers from other teams,[4] Kundla remained as head coach until retiring at age 60 following season 1960–61.[5][6] Despite his team’s modest winning record and inconsistensy during his tenure,[7] he is credited with developing key players such as Elgin Baylor[8]and Jerry West.[9] In++;t>lat
