Introduction
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues, the highest professional level of American football in the world, the wealthiest professional sport league by revenue, and the sport league with the most valuable teams.
The NFL was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL agreed to merge with the American Football League (AFL) in 1966, and effective from 1970 are considered a single league with two conferences. Following an expansion of teams from 14 to 26 between 1960 and 1970, an AFL–NFL merger agreement was approved by team owners in 1970 resulting in a common draft and championship game between 1974 onwards. The merger created many changes; firstly, divisional play and playoff formats were introduced; secondly, teams were placed into two conferences—the AFC and NFC—each of which contained 16 teams.
The NFL is headquartered in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It is widely considered to be America’s most popular sport while being one of its richest sports leagues. The 2019 season is scheduled to begin on September 5th with a Thursday Night Kickoff game between Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
