Introduction
The NBA (National Basketball Association) is a professional basketball league in North America. The NBA is composed of 30 teams, 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada. The league is divided into two conferences, the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference. Each conference has three divisions, and each division has five teams. The NBA season runs from October to June, with each team playing 82 games. The playoffs follow, culminating in the NBA Finals.
Eastern Conference
The Eastern Conference is one of the two conferences in the NBA. It consists of 15 teams, which are split into 3 divisions. The teams in the Eastern Conference play each other more often than they play teams in the Western Conference, as part of the NBA’s unbalanced schedule. The top 8 teams in the conference make the playoffs at the end of the season, with the top team in each division guaranteed a spot.
Western Conference
The Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of two conferences that makes up the league, the other being the Eastern Conference. Like the Eastern Conference, the Western Conference is made up of 15 teams, organized in three divisions.
The divisional alignment was adopted at the start of the 2004–05 season, when then-league commissioner David Stern announced plans to expand the NBA by adding 30 new franchises. Of the three divisions in each conference, five teams each are allotted to Central and Pacific Divisions, while the Southwest Division gets six teams. As a result, since its inception five teams from each conference have not belonged to a division.
Currently, there are no NBA teams in Alaska or Hawaii; Alaska does not have any professional sports teams, while Hawaii is home to one Major League Baseball team (the Honolulu Sharks), one National Football League team (the Honolulu Hurricanes) and two Minor League Baseball teams (the Maui Symphony and the Kauai Flood).
