The defensive backs (DBs) are the players on an American football team who take positions somewhat back from the line of scrimmage; they are distinguished from the defensive line, which refers to linemen who line up directly opposite the offensive line. The groups of DBs are also referred to as the secondary. DBs main task is to defend against offensive plays, whether run or pass, and try and force turnovers.

The objectives of most DBs is to stop the receiver from getting open, intercept passes, and make tackles. They will usually play zones in the area around their own end zone to prevent their opponents from making a long completion or touchdown catch. Often, these will be “cover 2” or “cover 3” defenses where each defensive back is responsible for defending a specific deep zone in order to prevent their opponents from making a long completion or touchdown catch.

DBs will also sometimes play man-to-man defense where they are assigned to specific receivers and need to prevent them from making catches.

Special Teams

Today, there will be many special teams playing in the NFL. This includes the punt returners, the field goal kickers, and even the long snappers. These are the men and women who make sure that the ball is kicked or thrown in the right direction, and who also help to protect the players on offense and defense. They are an important part of any team, and they often make a big difference in the game.
