The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself to the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL agreed to merge with rival American Football League (AFL) in 1966, creating a 26-team league with two conferences: The National Football Conference (NFC), featuring thirteen teams that resulted from AFL merging with NFL’s older clubs, and an AAFC-NFL created AFC with ten expansion teams that began play in 1960. In 1970 following several expansion attempts by rival leagues which created competing versions of pro football including an AFL-NFL World Championship Game also known as Super Bowl game three years earlier between then Baltimore Colts (“NFL Champions”) and New York Jets (“AFL Champions”), NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle proposed a merger between both leagues which was unanimously approved by owners of both leagues. The resulting league had 28 teams.

Whichever teams win this weekend will advance to the divisional round next week, where they will take on the top seeds in each conference (the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams). It should be a great weekend of football!
