The Teams

This year’s NFL season is off to a great start and there are some great match-ups this week. In the AFC, the New England Patriots will be taking on the Indianapolis Colts. In the NFC, the New Orleans Saints will be up against the Carolina Panthers.

AFC

The American Football Conference (AFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League, the highest professional level of American football in the world. This conference and its counterpart the National Football Conference (NFC), currently contain 16 teams organized into 4 divisions.

The AFC was established on June 8, 1970, when the NFL merged with its then-rival league, the American Football League (AFL). Since the AFL–NFL merger, five expansion teams have joined the AFC—the Seattle Seahawks in 1976 (as part of a 4-team expansion), the Houston Oilers / Tennessee Titans in 2002 (as part of a 2-team expansion along with the other former AFL club now in the AFC, Buffalo Bills), as well as three teams that began play in 1995 as part of the most recent wave of NFL franchises: Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, and Baltimore Ravens. All these teams were previously in either central or western cities in their previous incarnations as either AAFC or AFL clubs; none had previously been located east or south of Pittsburgh until their relocations for 1995. Cleveland and Louisville had minor changes made to their names in 1996 due to fan reaction (Cleveland Browns returned after it was temporarily dropped when Art Modell moved his team to Baltimore; Louisville Cardinals became Kentucky Cardinals for one year before changing back)

AFC teams are generally seen as playing second fiddle to NFC teams not only because they have generally enjoyed less success on average—winning only 25% of Super Bowls contested between them—but also because they generally appear on television less often than NFC teams during prime time games. This is partly due to historical television ratings which favored games featuring NFC teams; consequently most Divisional and Conference Championship games involving AFC teams were played during afternoon hours while those involving NFC opponents were played during prime time.

NFC

The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL). This conference consists of 16 teams, organized into four divisions. The NFC plays against the AFC in the annual NFL playoffs.

The NFC West is made up of the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and Arizona Cardinals. The Seahawks are the defending conference champions.

The NFC North is made up of the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions, and Chicago Bears. The Packers are the most successful team in this division, having won 17 conference championships.

The NFC East is made up of the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, and New York Giants. The Cowboys are one of the most successful teams in NFL history, having won 20 conference championships.

The NFC South is made up of the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Panthers are the reigning conference champions.

Conclusion

The NFL regular season is coming to a close and there are only a few games left to determine who will make it to the playoffs. Among those still in contention are the New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, and Green Bay Packers. These four teams will all be playing each other in the next week in what promises to be some very exciting games. So who’s playing tomorrow night in the NFL?
