The NFC was created in 1970 as part of the AFL–NFL merger, when the AFL’s 10 teams plus three NFL teams (the original Dallas Cowboys who had joined that same year as well as the expansion Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints) were grouped together to form an 11-team conference. At first, only four teams qualified for the playoffs: two division winners and two wild card clubs. Since 1975, each team that wins their division title earns a playoff berth. The NFC Championship Game is played between the division winners each January with home-field advantage going to the team with the best record in the regular season.
