Whos The Best Team In Nfl History?
Contents
It’s a debate as old as time itself: who’s the best team in NFL history? The answer may surprise you.
The Best Teams
No other team has been as dominant as the Pittsburgh Steelers were in the 1970s. From 1970 to 1979, they won an incredible six Super Bowls. In that decade, they had an average winning percentage of .714, which is the best in NFL history.
The Greatest Show on Turf
From 1999 to 2001, the Rams were one of the most explosive offenses the NFL had ever seen. They were led by NFL MVP Kurt Warner, and future Hall of Famers Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt. The Rams scored at least 500 points in each of those seasons, becoming just the second team in NFL history to do so. In 2000, they set the NFL record for points scored in a season with 526.
The 1972 Miami Dolphins
Shula’s Dolphins won the AFC East in 1971 with a 10–4 record, before winning the AFC Championship Game at home over the Baltimore Colts, 21–0. In Super Bowl VI, they defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 24–3. The 1972 Dolphins went 14–0 in the regular season and became the first and still only team to finish an entire season undefeated and untied from start to finish, including winning all their playoff games. They are the only NFL team to go undefeated in a 14-game regular season schedule since the 16-game regular schedule was adopted in 1978.
The 1985 Chicago Bears
The 1985 Chicago Bears season was their 66th regular season and 16th post-season completed in the National Football League (NFL). The team was looking to improve on their 10–6 record from 1984 and return to the playoffs. They finished the season with a franchise-best 15–1 record, before winning Super Bowl XX 46–10, becoming only the second team ever (after the 1972 Miami Dolphins) to win a championship with only one loss or tie.
The Worst Teams
The worst teams in NFL history have been the Detroit Lions, the Cleveland Browns, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. These teams have all had losing records for a majority of their seasons. The Lions have only had two winning seasons in the last 20 years, the Browns have only had one winning season in the last 10 years, and the Buccaneers have only had two winning seasons in the last 15 years.
The 2008 Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit.
The 2017 Cleveland Browns
2017 was a trying year for the Cleveland Browns. They finished the season with an abysmal record of 0-16, becoming the second team in NFL history to go winless over the course of a 16-game season. It was a tough pill to swallow for a franchise that had once been one of the most dominant in all of football.
The 2017 Browns were led by a ragtag group of players, many of whom were castoffs from other teams or rookies who weren’t quite ready for the rigors of the NFL. Their quarterback, DeShone Kizer, was intercepted a league-leading 22 times. Their leading rusher, Isaiah Crowell, averaged just 3.8 yards per carry. And their defense was porous, allowing opponents to score an average of 27 points per game.
It was clear that the Browns were in need of a major overhaul. And that’s exactly what they got in 2018. The team brought in a new general manager and head coach, and they used their first-overall draft pick to select quarterback Baker Mayfield. With a new regime in place and some fresh faces on the roster, the Browns are hopeful that they can turn things around and become competitive once again.
The 2001 Carolina Panthers
The 2001 Carolina Panthers season was the franchise’s 7th season in the National Football League and the 1st under head coach George Seifert. The team tried to improve on their 11–5 record from 2000, but they finished with a disappointing 7–9 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 1996.
