The highest paid coach in the NFL is Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots. Belichick has been with the Patriots since 2000, and has led the team to six Super Bowl titles.
Bill Belichick- New England Patriots
In 2018, Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots became the highest-paid coach in NFL history, signing a five-year extension that is reportedly worth $85 million. Belichick’s annual average salary of $17 million per year is more than double that of the next highest-paid coach, Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks, who makes $11 million per year.
Pete Carroll- Seattle Seahawks
Pete Carroll is the current head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. He is also the highest paid coach in the NFL, with an annual salary of $11 million. Carroll has been with the Seahawks since 2010, and has led them to two Super Bowl appearances, winning one in 2014.
Jon Gruden- Oakland Raiders
As of 2019, Jon Gruden is the highest paid coach in the NFL, making $100 million over a span of 10 years.
Sean Payton- New Orleans Saints
As of 2019, Sean Payton is the highest paid coach in the NFL, with an annual salary of $10 million. Payton has been the head coach of the New Orleans Saints since 2006, and has led the team to one Super Bowl victory.
Andy Reid- Kansas City Chiefs
In 2018, Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs became the highest-paid coach in NFL history, Forbes reports. Reid signed a five-year contract extension worth $75 million, which includes a $7 million signing bonus, making him the first coach to earn an annual salary of more than $10 million.
Reid’s extension comes as no surprise given his team’s success in recent years. The Chiefs have made the playoffs in four of the past five seasons under Reid, including an appearance in the AFC Championship game in 2018. In addition to his on-field success, Reid is also lauded for his player development skills, having helped turn quarterbacks like Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes into stars.
While Reid is currently the highest-paid coach in the NFL, that distinction may not last long. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is reportedly close to signing a contract extension that would make him the highest-paid coach in league history. Belichick’s deal is expected to be worth around $11 million per year, which would eclipse Reid’s annual salary by $1 million.
Kyle Shanahan- San Francisco 49ers
In 2017, the average NFL head coach made $6.4 million per year, according to a USA Today report. That’s more than double what coaches earned a decade ago. The highest-paid coach in the NFL is New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who earned an annual salary of $12 million in 2017, according to the same USA Today report.
Matt Nagy- Chicago Bears
The Bears coach is in the second year of his four-year, $32 million contract. He’s scheduled to make $8 million in 2020 — a number that will jump to $10 million in 2021 and $12 million in each of the following two seasons, per Spotrac.
Doug Pederson- Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles have the highest-paid coach in the NFL, Doug Pederson. He signed a five-year contract extension worth $50 million in 2019. Pederson led the Eagles to a Super Bowl win in 2018, and his base salary is $5 million per year.
Bruce Arians- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Bruce Arians is the current head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was born on October 3, 1952, in Paterson, New Jersey. He is a former college and professional football player, and has been a head coach in both college and the NFL. In 2019, he was named the NFL Coach of the Year. Arians has coached two teams to Super Bowl appearances: the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008 (Super Bowl XLIII) and the Arizona Cardinals in 2015 (Super Bowl XLIX).
Sean McVay- Los Angeles Rams
In 2018, Sean McVay became the youngest head coach in NFL history when he was hired by the Los Angeles Rams at the age of 30. He has since led the Rams to three consecutive NFC West titles and was named NFL Coach of the Year in 2017.
Under McVay, the Rams have compiled a regular season record of 32-16 (.667), which is the best record in the NFC West over that span. He has also led the Rams to back-to-back appearances in the NFC Championship game, becoming the first head coach in franchise history to do so.
Prior to joining the Rams, McVay spent seven seasons with the Washington Redskins, where he served as offensive coordinator for three years (2014-2016). Under his tutelage, Washington averaged 21.2 points per game during that span, which was good for 11th in the NFL.
In 2018, McVay signed a five-year contract extension with the Rams that made him one of the highest-paid coaches in NFL history. His average annual salary of $11 million per year ranks second among all head coaches, behind only New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
