He is considered one of the best tight end prospects in NFL history. However, their recent draft history is not all positive. In 2018, they took Vita Vea with the 12th overall pick. He has been injury-prone and has not lived up to his potential. In 2017, they took O.J. Howard with the 19th overall pick. He has been inconsistent and has not become the star that many thought he would be.

Part of the reason for their struggles has been their inability to draft and develop talent. Since 2015, they have spent six first- or second-round picks on defensive players, and none of them have made a significant impact. This is a big part of why the 49ers defense ranks near the bottom of the league in most statistical categories.
