The San Francisco 49ers are an American football team based in Santa Clara, California. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The 49ers joined the NFL in 1946 as a member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and entered the NFL in 1949 when the AAFC merged with the NFL. The team played its home games at Kezar Stadium until 1970, when it moved to Candlestick Park. In 2019, the 49ers moved to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

The 49ers have had 19 head coaches throughout their franchise history; their first head coach was Buck Shaw, who served from 1946 to 1953.
