Who is the youngest player in the NFL right now?
At just 21 years old, Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker DeVonte’ Fields is the youngest player in the NFL right now. Fields was drafted by the Buccaneers in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
How did they get there?
In 2010, the average NFL player was 27.5 years old. In order to be eligible to play in the NFL, players must be out of high school for at least three years. That means that the youngest player in the NFL right now was born in 1992.
There have been a few players who have been drafted into the NFL straight out of high school, but they are few and far between. The most recent example is Steelers linebacker Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who was drafted in 2020. He is the only player in the past 15 years to be drafted out of high school.
The vast majority of NFL players come from college football programs. Out of the 1,696 players on NFL rosters at the start of the 2020 season, 1,438 came from NCAA programs. That’s 85 percent of all NFL players! Just over 200 players came from Canadian Football League programs, while a handful came from other professional leagues or levels of college football ( Division II , Division III , etc ).
So if you want to play in the NFL someday, your best bet is to focus on playing well in college!

The average NFL career lasts just over three years, so any player who makes it to a fourth season is doing something right. But for young players, the NFL can be an especially tough place to find success. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a number of young players make an immediate impact in the league, only to flame out just as quickly. So what does the future hold for the youngest player in the NFL right now?
At just 21 years old, Cleveland Browns’ quarterback Baker Mayfield is the youngest player in the NFL. Mayfield was drafted first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, and he’s already shown plenty of promise in his young career. He’s been named the NFL’s Rookie of the Year and has led the Browns to their first playoff appearance in 18 years.
Mayfield still has a lot to prove, but he appears to be on track for a long and successful career in the NFL. With plenty of young talent around him on offense, Mayfield should only continue to improve in the coming years. If he can stay healthy and develop as expected, there’s no reason he can’t become one of the best quarterbacks in the league for many years to come.
