The Current Standings

The NBA season is in full swing and there are a lot of teams vying for the title. The Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers are at the top of the standings right now. The Warriors are currently on a nine-game winning streak and the Cavaliers have won eight out of their last ten games.

Eastern Conference

The Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of two conferences that makes up the league, the other being the Western Conference. Like the Western Conference, the Eastern Conference is made up of 15 teams, organized in three divisions.

The current divisional alignment was introduced in 2004, when the now Charlotte Hornets began play as the NBA’s 30th franchise. This realignment altered theDivisional structure of the NBAunforseenly, and as a result, further changes were made to help balance out the conferences and divisions. The NBA Finals is played between the winner of each conference’s playoff.

As of 2019, the Eastern Conference has won more championships than the Western Conference; this includes both Championships won by teams from when the NBA was known asthe Basketball Association of America (BAA), and also includes championships won by teams afterthe NBA merged withthe National Basketball League (NBL).

The conference has 16 former champions: 13 are still active franchises (the Celtics, livestrongLakers, Pistons, Heat, Bulls, Knicks, 76ers/Nationals/Syndicates, Trail Blazers, Pacers*), and 3 have moved to other conferences (the Rockets*, Hawks*, and Nationals/76ers*/Syndicates*). Of these 16 franchises, 11 have been in continuous existence since 1947 (Celtics*, Lakers*, Pistons*, Heat*, Knicks*, Sixers*/Nationals/*Syndicates/*76ers*, Hawks*, Bullets*/Wizards*, Nets*/Jets*/Dodgers), and one since 1948 (Pacers).

The Boston Celtics have won the most championships with 17 total. The Celtics also hold the record for having won 8 consecutive championships (from 1959 to 1966), as well as earning 9 trips to Finals in a row from 1957–1958 until 1965–1966. The Lakers have appeared in a record 31 Finals series—more than twice that of any other team—and have won 16 titles. The Philadelphia 76ers have appeared in 18 Finals series—7 more times than any other team apart from the Lakers—and have won 3 championships. The Western Conference has historically been home to more successful NBA teams than the Eastern Conference, with teams from the West winning a majority of NBA championships since 1980. As of 2020, there have been 36 Western Conference champions and 30 Eastern Conference champions.

Eastern Conference

The Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of two conferences that makes up the association, the other being the Western Conference. Featuring 15 teams, the Eastern Conference has three divisions, which are Central, Atlantic, and Southeast. These divisions are further broken down into two conferences:
-The East has five teams in the Atlantic Division and ten in the Central Division.
-The West has five teams in the Southwest Division and ten in the Northwest Division.

The top eight seeds qualify for the playoffs. The playoffs are a best-of-seven series. The first team to win four games advances to the next round, while the losing team is eliminated from contention.

Western Conference

In the Western Conference, there are a few teams that are standing out. The Los Angeles Lakers have the best record in the conference, and they show no signs of slowing down. The Lakers have been led by superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, who have been dominating opponents night in and night out. The Lakers have a deep bench that has been able to step up and contribute when needed, and they look like they are poised to make a run at the NBA Finals.

The Los Angeles Clippers have also been playing very well, and they are currently in second place in the conference. The Clippers have two of the best players in the league in Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, and they have been carrying the team on both ends of the court. The Milwaukee Bucks are currently in third place in the conference, but they are only a few games behind the first-place Lakers. The Bucks have been led by MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has been doing it all for his team. The Bucks also have a very deep team, and they could be a tough out for anyone in the playoffs

Eastern Conference

The Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of two conferences that makes up the league, the other being the Western Conference. Like the Western Conference, the Eastern Conference is made up of 15 teams, organized in three divisions.

The conference was founded in 1949 as a counterpart to the Western Conference. At that time, there were only eight teams in the NBA. The conference has changed a lot since then; today, it is home to some of the most successful franchises in NBA history.

The Boston Celtics, for example, have won a record 17 NBA championships. Other noteworthy teams in the Eastern Conference include the Philadelphia 76ers (still commonly known as the Sixers), who have won three championships; and the New York Knicks, who have won two.

In recent years, however, it has been the teams in the bottom half of the conference that have been making headlines. The Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat, and Milwaukee Bucks are all currently ranked in the bottom four of their respective divisions.

Western Conference

In the Western Conference, there are a few teams that stand out above the rest. The Los Angeles Lakers have been at the top of the conference for several years now, and they don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. The Bucks have the best record in the NBA at 54-12, and they’re on pace to win over 70 games for the first time since the 1971-72 season. The Bucks are led by MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is averaging 29.6 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game. The Bucks also have one of the best defenses in the NBA, allowing just 102.5 points per 100 possessions (2nd in the NBA).

The second-best team in the Eastern Conference is the Toronto Raptors, who are 50-17 on the season. The Raptors are led by All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry, who is averaging 19.7 points and 7.5 assists per game. The Clippers have quietly built one of the best rosters in the league, and they will be looking to prove that they are the better team in Los Angeles. This should be a fun rivalry to watch all season long.

-Portland Trail Blazers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder: These two teams met in the first round of the playoffs last year, with the Trail Blazers coming out on top in six games. The Thunder made some big changes in the offseason, acquiring All-Star forward Paul George and veteran center Nerlens Noel. The Trail Blazers are looking to build on their success from last season, so this should be a great matchup all year long.
