They then entered a rebuilding phase with superstar LeBron James’ departure in 2014. However, despite entering into another rebuild after his return to Cleveland a year later, they managed to make four straight post-season appearances from 2016 to 2019; in 2020 NBA season resumption after coronavirus pandemic hiatus, led by Jimmy Butler acquired just before its start via trade, they advanced all the way to NBA Finals for the first time since 2014 but eventually lost it against Los Angeles Lakers.

In 50 seasons of play (1971–72 to 2020–21), the Rockets have compiled a regular season record of 2,451–1,397 (.637), winning more than 60 percent of their games overall.

In 1971, the Rockets moved to Houston; the team’s name was changed to reflect its new city. The Rockets won only 15 games in their debut season as a league worst 20–62 record. They went on to make the playoffs seven times in their next nine seasons culminating in a 1977 conference semi-final appearance against the Seattle SuperSonics which they lost four games to two. They never managed to get past 2nd round of playoffs since then until they finally broke through under head coach Rudy Tomjanovich taking them all the way to NBA finals for back-to-back championship wins against Eastern Conference teams New York Knicks (1994) and Orlando Magic (1995).

The team was established as the Vancouver Grizzlies, an expansion team that joined the NBA for the 1995–96 season. After relocating to Memphis, Tennessee, before the 2001–02 season, the franchise joined the NBA’s Western Conference Southwest Division. As a result of being based in one of only two Canadian markets without another NBA franchise (the other being Winnipeg), along with only having several hundred fans attend most home games during their five-year tenure in Vancouver, resulting in mounting financial losses for then-owners Michael Heisley and Stu Jackson; on July 3, 2001, NBA owners unanimously voted to allow Heisley to move the franchise to Memphis.[8][9]
