Baylor and Pettit would later lead their own teams to NBA titles in 1958 and 1959 respectively; Pettit’s Hawks were defeated by Bill Russell’s Celtics in six games during that year’s Finals while Baylor was injured and did not participate in his team’s victory over the Celtics four months later. In 1975, after losing star player Rick Barry to free agency after eight seasons with the organization, fiberglass manufacturer Franklin Mieuli purchased a 24% interest in the team for $3 million dollars from co-owners Newton Calvert and Robert Schmertz; Mieuli would later purchase an additional 32% stake two years later for $4 million dollars becoming majority owner of the then-struggling franchise

In the post-season, Golden State faced fellow division rivals San Diego Rockets led by head coach Alex Hannum; despite losing game one on their home court by just two points 114–112 thanks to 37 points from Rick Barry
The Warriors went on win three straight games on their way to sweeping Hannum’s Rockets 4–0 en route to advancing into the Western Division Finals where they faced Wilt Chamberlain’s Lakers once again. After losing game one 105–94 on Los Angeles’ home courtGolden State evened up the series with a 108–103 victory at The Arena in Oakland as rookie forward Alfonso Smith scored 22 points off bench while backcourt mate Butch Beard added 19 more; however L.A. would win games three 112–102 and four 109–103 giving them a commanding 3–1 lead overAttles’ squad heading back north into Oakland for game five
