In 1975, after losing star player Rick Barry to free agency after eight seasons with the organization, fiberglass manufacturer Franklin Mieuli purchased a 24% interest in the team for $3 million dollars from co-owners Newton Calvert and Robert Schmertz; Mieuli would later purchase an additional 32% stake two years later for $4 million dollars becoming majority owner of the then-struggling franchise
