Why Are NHL Players Not In The Olympics?

The NHL has decided not to send its players to the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Here’s why.
NHL Players in the Olympics
Every four years, when the Winter Olympics come around, there is always the question of whether or not NHL players will participate. The NHL has always said no, and they continue to say no even now. There are a few reasons why the NHL does not want their players to go to the Olympics.
The NHL and the Olympics
Since the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, NHL players have been competing in the men’s ice hockey tournament. It’s been a popular addition to the Games, with many of the world’s best players going head-to-head on the international stage.
But for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, NHL players will not be taking part. So why is this? There are a few reasons…
First and foremost, it’s simply too disruptive to the NHL season. The Winter Olympics take place in February, right in the middle of the NHL campaign. This means that teams would have to release their players mid-season, disrupting team unity and continuity.
Secondly, there are concerns over player safety. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not provide insurance for NHL players taking part in the Games, meaning that clubs could be left out of pocket if one of their stars was injured while representing their country.
And finally, there is a financial dispute between the IOC and the NHL. The league has made it clear that it wants compensation for releasing its players to take part in the Olympics; something that the IOC has been unwilling to agree to.
So with all that being said, it doesn’t look likely that we will see NHL players at future Winter Olympics – at least not until these issues have been resolved.
NHL players in the Olympics
With the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang fast approaching, the question on many hockey fans’ minds is: why are NHL players not in the Olympics?
The answer is a complicated one, but it boils down to a combination of factors including money, scheduling, and player safety.
Firstly, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not payout to NHL players or teams for their participation in the Olympics. This means that any NHL player who participates in the Olympics does so without pay.
Secondly, participating in the Olympics would require shutting down the NHL season for over two weeks – something that is not feasible from a financial standpoint. In addition, holding the Olympics during the NHL season raises concerns about player safety. With so many games already being played during an 82-game season, adding additional high-intensity games – particularly on international ice – increases the risk of injury.
Lastly, it should be noted that while NHL players are not permitted to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics, other professional hockey leagues around the world will be sending players. This includes leagues in Russia, Sweden, and Finland. As a result, fans can still expect to see some of their favorite NHL stars on the ice in Pyeongchang – just not representing their home country.
Why Are NHL Players Not In The Olympics?
This year’s Winter Olympics are just around the corner, but there’s one thing that’s missing – NHL players. For the first time since 1994, NHL players will not be competing in the Olympics. So, why are NHL players not in the Olympics? There are a few reasons. First, the NHL does not want to halt its season for three weeks in the middle of February. Second, the NHL is not happy with the way that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been running the Olympics. Third, there are concerns about the safety of NHL players in the Olympics. Let’s take a closer look at each of these reasons.
The NHL and the Olympics
The National Hockey League (NHL) is the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, consisting of 30 member clubs across the United States and Canada. The Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, is awarded annually to the NHL playoff champion at the end of each season.
The Olympics are a major international multi-sport event held every four years. The Winter Olympics feature seven sports disciplines and fifteen events, including ice hockey.
The NHL has participated in five Olympic Games: 1998 Nagano, 2002 Salt Lake City, 2006 Turin, 2010 Vancouver, and 2014 Sochi. In each of those five instances, NHL players made up the majority of players on each respective country’s roster. However, for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the NHL has stated that its players will not be attending. So why are NHL players not in the Olympics?
There are several reasons for this decision. First and foremost, the NHL is hesitant to shut down its regular season for two-plus weeks in order to accommodate the Olympic tournament schedule. This would be a significant financial loss for the league as it would mean games not being played and tickets not being sold.
Additionally, there is also a risk of injury to NHL players during Olympic competition. This was demonstrated in 2014 when New York Islanders star John Tavares suffered a season-ending knee injury while playing for Team Canada. Tavares was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the NHL regular season and playoffs. The Islanders went on to miss the playoffs that year. As a result, many NHL teams are hesitant to allow their best players to compete at the Olympics for fear of injury.
Finally, some have argued that participation in past Olympic Games has not been beneficial to growing the sport of hockey globally. For example, prior to 1998 there had only been two Winter Olympics held outside of Europe or North America (92 Albertville & 80 Lake Placid). In contrast, since 1998 there have been six (02 Salt Lake City, 06 Turin, 10 Vancouver, 14 Sochi , 18 Pyeongchang & 22 Beijing). While this does show an uptick in games being held in non-traditional markets for hockey, it does not guarantee that there will be an increase in popularity or growth for hockey globally as a result of NHL player participation in future Winter Olympics.
In light of these reasons, it is unlikely that we will see NHL players at future Winter Olympic Games anytime soon.
NHL players in the Olympics
NHL players have not been in the Olympics since the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. There are several reasons for this. First, the NHL does not have a break in its season for the Olympics, so NHL players would have to miss games to compete. Second, the travel to and from South Korea for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics is long and difficult, and NHL teams are concerned about player fatigue and injuries. Third, the International Olympic Committee does not pay for travel or insurance for NHL players, so the NHL would have to absorb those costs. Finally, there is a dispute between the NHL and the International Hockey Federation over who would control player rights during the Olympics. For these reasons, it is unlikely that we will see NHL players in the Olympics again any time soon.
