Why Esports Should Not Be A Sport?

Many people argue that esports should not be considered a sport. Here’s why.

Why Esports Should Not Be A Sport?

The Lack of Physical Activity

What separates sports from other activities is the physical element. To be a sport, an activity MUST be physical. Esports, otherwise known as electronic sports, are a form of competition that is facilitated by electronic systems, typically video games. The term “esports” is used to refer to organized multiplayer video gaming competitions, usually between professional players. (Esports, 2020) These events are often broadcasted on online streaming platforms such as Twitch and YouTube.

Esports do not require much physical activity

Esports are a form of competition that is facilitated by electronic systems, typically involving the use of video games. Esports often take the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players. The most common video games genres associated with esports are real-time strategy, first-person shooter (FPS), and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). Tournaments such as The International, the League of Legends World Championship, the Evolution Championship Series and the Intel Extreme Masters provide live broadcasts of the competition, and prize money to competitors.

While physical activity is not always necessary for esports, many esports require quick reflexes and hand-eye coordination. Some popular examples of esports include Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, League of Legends, Overwatch and StarCraft II.

The Lack of Competition

Esports has been around for quite some time, but only recently has it started to gain mainstream attention. Some people believe that esports should be considered a sport, but there are a few reasons why this is not the case. The biggest reason is that there is lack of competition in esports.

Esports lack the competition that traditional sports have

The idea of competition is at the heart of what makes a sport a sport. In order to be considered a sport, there must be an element of competition between two or more parties. This is what separates sports from other forms of physical activity and entertainment.

While esports do have some competition, it is not on the same level as traditional sports. For example, in traditional sports such as basketball or football, there are leagues with multiple teams that compete against each other on a regular basis. The level of competition in esports is nowhere near that of traditional sports.

This lack of competition is why many people believe that esports should not be considered a sport. Without the same level of competition, it is difficult to see how esports can be considered on the same level as traditional sports.

The Lack of Strategy

Strategy is what separates the best from the rest in any sport. In traditional sports, the best athletes are usually the ones with the best strategic minds. This is not the case with esports. In esports, the best players are usually the ones with the best mechanical skills. This is because there is very little strategy involved in most esports.

Esports lack the strategic element that traditional sports have

The lack of strategy is one of the main arguments esports should not be a sport. In football, basketball, hockey, and baseball, there are timeouts, huddles, and other opportunities for strategy sessions. Coaches use these opportunities to relay strategic information to their team so they can execute a plan on the field or court.

In esports, there is no such opportunity for strategic planning. The game is always on and teams have to make split-second decisions. There is no time to huddle up and discuss what the next play should be. This lack of strategic planning makes esports less like traditional sports and more like gaming.

The Lack of Skills

Esports lack the skills that traditional sports require

While esports may require some level of skill, they lack the skills that traditional sports require. For example, traditional sports require coordination, teamwork, and Strategy, while esports only require coordination and focus. This is why many people do not believe that esports should be considered a sport.
