The Woodchucks: A Brief History
The Woodchucks are a minor League Baseball team that has been in operation since the early 1900s. The team has seen many changes over the years, but they have always been dedicated to providing a fun and family-friendly environment for their fans.
The Woodchucks began as the “Chattanooga Lookouts” in 1909, and they played their first game on April 14th of that year. The team was a charter member of the Southern Association, which was one of the first minor leagues in baseball. The Lookouts won the very first Southern Association pennant in 1910, and they went on to win two more pennants in 1912 and 1913.
In 1914, the team moved to Montgomery, Alabama and became known as the “Montgomery Rebels”. The team continued to find success on the field, winning pennants in 1915 and 1916. In 1917, the team was bought by new owners and renamed the “Montgomery Lions”. The Lions had a brief period of success, winning a pennant in 1918 before disbanding due to financial problems.
In 1919, the team was resurrected as the “Chattanooga Lookouts” once again. The Lookouts enjoyed another period of success, winning pennants in 1922, 1923, 1926, 1927, and 1928. In 1929, however, the team fell on hard times and was forced to move to Nashville, Tennessee due to financial difficulties.
The team became known as the “Nashville Volunteers” when they moved to Nashville. They enjoyed some success in Nashville, winning pennants in 1930 and 1931. However, financial difficulties forced the team to move again in 1932; this time to Atlanta, Georgia where they became known as the “Atlanta Crackers”.
The Crackers were one of the most successful teams in minor league baseball history; they won thirteen consecutive pennants from 1935-1948. In 1949, however, Major League Baseball expanded into Atlanta with the arrival of the Braves; this led to dwindling attendance at Crackers games and financial difficulties for the team once again. As a result, 1949 would be their last season in Atlanta; they moved back to Chattanooga after that season and reverted back to their original name: “the Chattanooga Lookouts”
