2021 Baseball ADP: The Most Overrated and Underrated Players

As we approach the 2021 baseball season it’s time to take a look at some of the most overrated and underrated players according to their ADP.

2021 Baseball ADP: The Most Overrated Players

In fantasy baseball “ADP” stands for “average draft position.” In other words, it’s a way of measuring where a player is typically being drafted in fantasy baseball leagues.

The most overrated players according to ADP are typically players who are being drafted too high given their expected performance. Conversely, the most underrated players are those who are being drafted too low given their expected performance.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most overrated and underrated players according to 2021 fantasy baseball ADP.

Overrated:
--Nolan Arenado 3B, Colorado Rockies Arenado is a perennial fantasy stud, but he’s being drafted as if he’s sure to repeat his 2020 performance. The reality is that Arenado is now in his 30s and playing half his games at Coors Field isn’t the same advantage it used to be. He’s still a good player but he’s not worth a top-10 pick.
--Mookie Betts OF, Los Angeles Dodgers Betts is another player who is being drafted far too early given his expected performance. He’s a great player, but he’s not worth a top-five pick. The reality is that there are other outfielders with similar upside who are going much later in drafts.
– Gerrit Cole, SP, New York Yankees Cole is one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he’s not worth a top-three pick. The Yankees have an excellent lineup and pitching staff, so Cole isn’t likely to rack up huge numbers in wins or strikeouts. He’s still a great pitcher, but there are others with similar upside who are going much later in drafts.

Underrated:
--Jose Altuve 2B, Houston Astros Altuve was limited to just 29 games last season due to injury, but he’s still one of the best second basemen in baseball when healthy. He’s currently being drafted outside the top 50 overall players, which makes him a great value pick.
-Mike Clevinger, SP Cleveland Indians Clevinger missed most of last season due to injury, but he’s healthy now and poised for a big season. He has ace potential and yet he’s currently being drafted outside the top 50 overall players.
-Brandon Woodruff SP Milwaukee Brewers Woodruff was limited to just 12 starts last season due to injury, but he was excellent when healthy (3.05 ERA/1.03 WHIP). He has ace potential and yet he doesn’t even crack the top 50 overall pitchers according to ADP.

The Most Overrated and Underrated Veterans

There are a number of veterans who are being drafted way too high in 2021 Fantasy Baseball drafts. Here are a few of the most overrated players:

Miguel Cabrera: The former MVP is now 36 years old and coming off of a season in which he hit just .249/.329/.399 with six home runs in 46 games. He’s still being drafted as a top-100 player, but there’s no reason to think he can still be a fantasy asset.

Shin-Soo Choo: Choo had a surprisingly good 2020, hitting .264/.333/.426 with eight home runs but he’s 37 years old and is unlikely to repeat those numbers. He’s being drafted as if he’s still in his prime, but he’s not.

Matt Kemp: Kemp had a solid 2020, hitting .276/.335/.425 with six home runs but he’s also 35 years old and is no longer an everyday player. He shouldn’t be drafted as anything more than a bench player in 2021.

On the other hand, there are a number of veterans who are being undervalued in 2021 drafts. Here are a few of the most underrated players:

Eduardo Escobar: Escobar was one of the best hitters in baseball last season, hitting .292/.350/.531 with 18 Home Runs in 60 games. He’s only being drafted as a top-200 player, but he should be going much higher than that.

Michael Brantley: Brantley had a down year offensively in 2020, but he’s still one of the best contact hitters in baseball. He’s only 33 years old and should rebound nicely in 2021. He’s currently being drafted outside of the top 200, but he should be going much higher than that.

Adam Eaton: Eaton had an injury-plagued 2020, but he’s still just 32 years old and is one of the best leadoff hitters in baseball when healthy. He’s currently being drafted outside of the top 200, but he should be going much higher than that.

The Most Overrated and Underrated Pitchers

With the 2021 baseball season underway, fans are already looking ahead to next year. Which players are being drafted too high? Who is being slept on? We took a look at the early Average Draft Position data to find the most overrated and underrated pitchers.

The Most Overrated Pitchers
Zach Greinke – ADP: 48.9
Greinke had a solid 2020 season, but his age (38) and declining velocity make him a risky pick in the early rounds of fantasy drafts.

Gerrit Cole – ADP: 19.4
Cole was phenomenal in 2020, but his strikeouts dropped sharply from 2019 and his ERA is bound to rise in 2021. He’s being drafted way too early.

The Most Underrated Pitchers
Shane Bieber – ADP: 25.6
Bieber was the best pitcher in baseball last season and yet he’s still being drafted behind other aces like Gerrit Cole and Jacob Degrom He’s a steal at his current ADP.

Yu Darvish – ADP: 41.5
Darvish had a career-best season in 2020, posting a 2.01 ERA and 0.96 WHIP while striking out over a batter per inning. He’s being drafted much too late given his elite production.

The Most Overrated and Underrated Hitters

In baseball, like any sport, there are players that are drafted way too early and players that are drafted way too late. In this article, we will take a look at some of the most overrated and underrated hitters in terms of their Average Draft Position (ADP) in 2021.

Some of the hitters that are being drafted too early include Ronald Acuna Jr. (ADP: 4.5), Fernando Tatis Jr. (ADP: 6.5), and Juan Soto (ADP: 9.5). All three of these players are talented, but they are being drafted way too early based on their ADP.

Ronald Acuna Jr.: Acuna is the fourth overall pick in drafts, but he is only 22 years old and has yet to play a full season in the majors. He is a great player, but he is not worth a top-five pick in drafts.

Fernando Tatis Jr.: Tatis is the sixth overall pick in drafts, but he is only 21 years old and has yet to play a full season in the majors. He is a great player with a lot of upside, but he is not worth a top-ten pick in drafts.

Juan Soto: Soto is the ninth overall pick in drafts, but he is only 20 years old and has yet to play a full season in the majors. He is a great player with a lot of upside, but he is not worth a top-ten pick in drafts.

Some of the hitters that are being drafted too late include Anthony Rendon (ADP: 16.5), Kris Bryant (ADP: 19), and Miguel Cabrera (ADP: 20). All three of these players are still productive hitters that are being undervalued based on their ADP.

Anthony Rendon: Rendon is the 16th overall pick in drafts, but he was the third overall pick last year and is only 29 years old. He is a great player that is being undervalued in drafts this year.

Kris Bryant: Bryant is the 19th overall pick in drafts, but he was the second overall pick just three years ago and is only 28 years old. He struggled last year, but he still has a lot of upside and is being undervalued in drafts this year.
Miguel Cabrera: Cabrera is the 20th overall pick in drafts, but he was the first overall pick just six years ago and is still just 35 years old. He struggled last year, but he still has a lot of upside and is being undervalued in drafts this year

The Most Overrated and Underrated Players in MLB

With the 2021 baseball season right around the corner, it’s time to take a look at the most overrated and underrated players in the sport.

There are a lot of factors that go into whether or not a player is overrated or underrated. It could be their performance in previous seasons, their talent level, how they’re being drafted in fantasy baseball leagues, or even how popular they are with fans.

Whatever the reason, there are always going to be players who are overhyped and others who are undervalued. Here are some of the most overrated and underrated players in Major League Baseball heading into the 2021 season.

Overrated:
Bryce Harper Philadelphia Phillies Harper is a great player, but he’s being drafted way too early in fantasy baseball drafts. He’s often going in the top five picks, which is way too high for a player who has only hit 30 home runs once in his career.

Miguel Sano, Minnesota Twins Sano is another player who is being drafted way too early in fantasy drafts. He’s often going in the top 10 picks, but he’s only hit more than 30 home runs once in his career. He’s also struck out more than 200 times three times in his career.

Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees Cole is one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he’s being drafted as if he’s the best pitcher in baseball. He’s often going as the first overall pick in fantasy drafts, but there are other pitchers who are just as good (if not better) than Cole.

Underrated:

Andrew McCutchen Philadelphia Phillies McCutchen is often overlooked because he doesn’t have flashy numbers like some other players. However, he’s a very consistent player who can hit for average and power and steal a few bases. He’s often available late in fantasy drafts, but he’s worth drafting much earlier than that.

Dee Gordon, Seattle Mariners Gordon is another player who doesn’t get a lot of love because he doesn’t hit for power. However, he’s one of the best base-stealers in baseball and can also hit for a decent average. He should be drafted much higher than he typically is in fantasy drafts.

Sonny Gray Cincinnati Reds Gray is often overlooked because he doesn’t have flashy numbers or play for a big-name team. However, he’s a very solid pitcher who can give you good numbers across the board. He should be drafted much higher than he typically is in fantasy drafts
