Cardinals Franchise History
The Cardinals franchise was founded in 1898, and is the oldest continuously run professional football team in America. The Cardinals have won two NFL Championships, in 1925 and 1947. They have also won six conference championships and nine division championships. The Cardinals currently play their home games at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
The team was originally based in Chicago, Illinois, and was known as the Racine Normals until 1901 when they were renamed the Chicago Cardinals. In 1960, the team moved to St. Louis, Missouri and became the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1988, the team moved to Tempe, Arizona and played their home games at Sun Devil Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University. In 2006, the team moved to their current home in Glendale.
The Cardinals are currently owned by Michael Bidwill, who took over ownership of the team from his father William V. Bidwill in 2002.
Current Cardinals Ownership
The current owners of the Arizona Cardinals are William V. Bidwill and his family. William V. Bidwill inherited the team from his father, Charles Bidwill, Sr., who had been the team’s owner since 1932. Charles Bidwill, Sr. purchased the team for $50,000 (equivalent to $893,360 in 2019) from fellow Chicagoans Chris O’Brien and James P. Dawson.
Cardinals’ Stadium
The Cardinals play their home games at State Farm Stadium, which is located in Glendale, Arizona. The stadium opened in 2006 and has a capacity of 63,400. It is the largest stadium in the NFL by seating capacity.
Cardinals’ Coaching Staff
The Cardinals’ coaching staff is led by head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who was hired on January 8, 2019. He is joined by offensive coordinator Tom Clements, defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers and quarterbacks coach Tom Brady (not that Tom Brady). That group will have their hands full this season, as the Cardinals have a lot of young talent that needs to be developed.
Cardinals’ Rivalries
The Cardinals have three primary rivals, two of which are intraconference opponents, while the other is an interconference opponent. The intraconference rivals, which the Cardinals play every year as a result of being in the same division as them, are the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers. The Cardinals’ interconference rival is the Seattle Seahawks.
The Cardinals also have a long-standing rivalry with the Dallas Cowboys, which has its roots in when both teams were members of the NFL’s NFC East division from 1970 to 2001. Although the Cowboys now compete in the NFC East’s rival conference, the NFC, the annual game between these two teams is often considered one of their most important games each season.
