After redshirting his first year at Coastal Carolina University, Donaldson transferred to Marshall University. In his first season with the Thundering Herd, he started all 59 games, hitting for a .305 average with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs. He was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team and the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team.

In his second season, Donaldson played in 58 games, starting 57 of them. He had a .293 batting average with 9 home runs and 44 RBIs. Again, he was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team and the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team.

In his junior year, Donaldson played in 58 games, starting all of them. He batted .290 with 11 home runs and 55 RBIs. He was named First Team All-Conference USA as well as being named Conference USA Player of the Year.

As a senior, Donaldson played in 59 games, starting all of them. He had a .287 batting average with 10 homers and 37 RBIs. He was once again named First Team All-Conference USA as well as being named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year.
