All Star Game Format

The All-Star Game is an exhibition game held every February that celebrates the best players in the NBA. The game is played between teams of players from the Eastern and Western Conferences, and the format of the game has changed several times over the years. Let’s take a look at the history of the All-Star Game and how it has evolved.

All Star Game Selection

The process for selection has changed over the years. Currently, the starting lineup for each conference is selected through a combination of fan, player, and media voting. The reserves (13 players per conference) are then selected by a vote amongst the head coaches from eachsection.

All Star Game Venue

The All-Star Game is held in the city of the team that won the championship the previous year. If the same city is hosting both the NBA Finals and the All-Star Game, then the host team for the All-Star Game is the finalist from the opposite conference. For example, if the Los Angeles Lakers are hosting both events, then the Eastern Conference All-Star representative would be the Milwaukee Bucks.

The National Basketball Association All-Star Game is a basketball exhibition game hosted every February by the National Basketball Association (NBA), matching a mix of the league’s star players, who are drafted by the two players with the most votes. Each team consists of 12 players, making it 24 in total. It is the featured event of NBA All-Star Weekend, a three-day event which goes from Friday to Sunday. The All-Star Game was first held in 1951.

All Star Game MVP

The All Star Game MVP is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given to the player voted best of the annual All-Star Game. The award was established in 1953 when NBA officials decided to designate an MVP for each year’s game. The league also re-honored players from the previous two All-Star Games. Ed Macauley and Paul Arizin were selected as the 1951 and 1952 MVPs respectively. Oscar Robertson was named the MVP for the 1960 game, which was his first of five All-Star appearances. Wilt Chamberlain earned the honor four times in his six appearances (1960, 1962–1964), becoming one of four players to win it at least that many times, along with Bob Petit (6), Kobe Bryant (4), and LeBron James (4). Russell Westbrook is the only player to have won back-to-back awards, doing so in 2015 and 2016; Bob Pettit is also the only player to have won multiple awards, winning three times between 1958 and 1962.

In total, 27 different players have won 37 MVP awards. Chamberlain holds both the record for most wins with four and most consecutive wins with three; James is third overall with four awards, all earned consecutively from 2006 through 2009; Bryant is second with four awards, all earned consecutively from 2008 through 2011; Irving was named MVP in 2014 and 2018, becoming just the seventh player to win multiple times; Robertson is second among active players behind James with three wins; Anthony Davis became just the sixth player ever to win in their hometown when he was named co-MVP alongside Westbrook in 2017 while playing for New Orleans Pelicans at Smoothie King Center; and Westbrook joined Robertson as just the second player ever to average a triple-double during an entire season when he averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists per game during his 2016–17 MVP campaign — a statistical feat only matched by Robertson’s 1961–62 triple-double season.

The least frequent years between winners are 1963 and 1966 (no winner was selected either year); this is due to fans not voting because of a rule change that allowed them to vote for three rather than two players that year..
