In the playoffs, they swept the Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs before routing the Philadelphia 76ers in the Finals 4-1. The 64th edition of the championship series was played between June 3 and June 17, was broadcast on ABC, and was watched by an average of 18.1 million people.

The Lakers entered the 2009–10 season as defending NBA champions, having defeated the Orlando Magic 4–1 in the 2009 NBA Finals. The team also featured two reigning league MVPs: forward Kobe Bryant and center Pau Gasol. The team held a dominating 46–20 record (a .697 winning percentage) at Staples Center and road records of 40–32 (.556). They entered the playoffs as the Western Conference’s second seed behind Northwest Division rival Denver Nuggets.

2006

The 2006 NBA Finals was the championship series of the 2005–06 NBA season. The Miami Heat won the title in six games over the Dallas Mavericks, becoming the third franchise in NBA history to come back from a 2-0 deficit in the Finals. Dwyane Wade of the Heat was named Most Valuable Player of the series, making him the first player other than Shaquille O’Neal or Kobe Bryant to win Finals MVP honors since Tim Duncan in 1999. It was Wade’s first championship.

2012

The Miami Heat are a professional basketball team based in Miami, Florida. They compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. The Heat play their home games at American Airlines Arena, and have won three NBA championships.

The franchise began play in the 1988–89 NBA season as an expansion team. It lost its first 15 games of the season before winning its first game on November 10, 1988, against the Los Angeles Clippers. Led by point guard and future Hall of Fame inductee Tim Hardaway,[2] and center Alonzo Mourning,[3]Miami made the playoffs for the first time in their third season and again five years later. After winning another division title in 1997, led by Hardaway and rookie swingman Kobe Bryant,[4] Miami went on to win 55 games before losing to eventual champion Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.[5]Among those who did not take kindly to this was Mourning, who felt betrayed after being voted out of his starting position in favor of second-year player Jamal Mashburn.[6] As a result, Mourning traded his next two seasons’ salary to Charlotte Hornets owner George Shinn during free agency while leaving Mashburn behind with head coach Pat Riley.[7][8][9 ]The following off-season was full of recognizable names either being drafted or signed via free agency: former Indiana Pacers All-Star Reggie Miller;[10] San Antonio Spurs guard Vinny Del Negro;[11 ]and Charlotte Hornets forward Glen Rice.[12 ] Among those who were not expecting to join the team were former Detroit Pistons All-Star Grant Long[13 ]and rookie forward Kurt Thomas.[14 ]One move that did pay off was acquiring forward P.J. Brown from the New Jersey Nets during a midseason trade for Jamal Mashburn.[15]

In just their second season with this core group of players, they improved to 59 wins led by hardworking veterans Miller and Brown along with young star Tim Duncan,[16 ] defeating the Indiana Pacers in seven games during the Eastern Conference Semifinals en route to their first ever NBA Finals appearance where they would face off against Riley’s former team: The New York Knicks.[17]

2013

The Miami Heat won the 2013 NBA championship, beating the San Antonio Spurs in seven games. LeBron James was named Finals MVP.

Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors are an American professional basketball team based in Oakland, California. The Warriors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division.

2015

The 2015 NBA Finals was the championship series of the 2014–15 season of the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the conclusion of that season’s playoffs. The Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors defeated the Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers in six games (4–2) for their league-leading fourth championship in franchise history, becoming the first team since the 2011 Dallas Mavericks to win a title after losing in the previous Finals. The Warriors were led by Finals MVP Andre Iguodala, who became the sixth player to receive the award without starting a game in the regular season or playoffs.

It was also Cleveland’s second consecutive Finals appearance, as well as Golden State’s fifth in franchise history and second in four years. These two teams had met in three previous NBA Finals, with each winning one, most recently in 1975 when Golden State won their only title until 2015. This was also the first time since 1984 that both participating teams had made previous Finals appearances since 1984, and just the third time it had happened overall ( 1977 and 1978 being the other two times). Cleveland earned their first Eastern Conference title since 2007, while Golden State won their first Western Conference title since 1975 and reached their first NBA Finals since 1976.

2017

The 2017 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s 2016–17 season and conclusion of the season’s playoffs. The Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors defeated the defending NBA champion and Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers, four games to one. This marked the first time in NBA history that two teams had met in three consecutive Finals.

The Cavaliers reclaimed home-court advantage in Game 3 with a 120–129 victory at Quicken Loans Arena, but the Warriors won Game 4 by a score of 118–113 to take a 3–1 series lead. The Cavaliers lost Kyrie Irving to injury early in Game 4, and LeBron James struggled throughout the series with his shooting.James played all 48 minutes in every game of the series, becoming only the sixth player to do so in an NBA Finals.

With the win, Golden State’s head coach Steve Kerr earned his second championship, while Finals MVP Kevin Durant became a champion for the first time in his career. This was also Kerr’s first Finals win without home-court advantage. Consequently, this was also Golden State’s first title since 1975 that was not clinched on their home court, as well as their first title clinched outside California.

2018

The 2018 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s 2017–18 season and conclusion of the season’s playoffs. In this best-of-seven playoff, the defending NBA champions and Western Conference champions Golden State Warriors swept the Eastern Conference champions Cleveland Cavaliers 4 games to 0, becoming the first team in NBA history to start and finish a playoff campaign 12–0. This was Golden State’s fourth consecutive trip to the NBA Finals. The Warriors were led by two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry, while the Cavaliers featured four-time NBA MVP LeBron James.

Both teams entered the Finals after enduring lengthy injury battles throughout the postseason. The Cavaliers had injuries to All-Stars Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving, while reserve player Kyle Korver also missed significant time. In addition, Warriors forwards Andre Iguodala and David West were injured during Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals against the Houston Rockets. Nevertheless, both teams persevered and made it to the Finals for a fourth consecutive year.

During Game 2 of the series ultimately won by Golden State, James achieved several milestones: he became only second player in NBA history—after Jerry West—to score 50 points in an NBA Finals game (achieving this mark with a 51-point effort); he joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as only second player with at least 30 points and eight assists in eight consecutive Finals games; and he moved past Michael Jordan into third place on the all-time list for most points scored in career playoff game (achieving this mark with his 159th career playoff game). However, James’ strong performance was not enough to overcome his team’s deficiencies, as Golden State won 112–102 to take a 2–0 series lead back home to Oakland.

In Game 3 at Oakland Coliseum, Curry scored 33 points as Golden State routed Cleveland 110–102 to take a commanding 3–0 lead in best-of-seven series. From there, potential sweep became reality as Durant led his team with 36 points en route to a 108–85 victory in Game 4, clinching Golden State’s third championship in four years—and their second straight title after defeating Cleveland in 2017 Finals rematch. This was also Durant’s second straight Finals MVP award, making him only third player ever (after Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal) to win back-to-back Finals MVPs with different teams.

Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors are a Canadian professional basketball team based in Toronto, Ontario. The Raptors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member club of the league’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. They were established in 1995, along with the Vancouver Grizzlies, as part of the NBA’s expansion into Canada.
