Contents
If you’re a fan of the NBA 2K series, you’re probably wondering if the newest installment is worth your hard-earned cash. Here’s a breakdown of what NBA 2K20 has to offer.
Introduction
It’s no secret that the NBA 2K series has been on a steady decline over the past few years. While the games have continued to look better and better, the actual gameplay and game modes have taken a backseat to microtransactions, forcing players to shell out more and more money just to keep up with the competition. This has led many longtime fans of the series to wonder: is NBA 2K20 worth buying?
We’ve put dozens of hours into the game so far, and while there are certainly some good things about it, overall we have to say that it’s not really worth your time or money. Here’s a breakdown of what we like and don’t like about NBA 2K20.
What’s new in NBA 2K20?
NBA 2K20 is the latest release in the NBA 2K franchise. The game is packed with new features and improvements, making it one of the best basketball simulations out there. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the new features in NBA 2K20 and see if the game is worth your hard-earned cash.
MyTEAM
Collect player cards featuring NBA legends from yesterday and today, and customize your perfect team to go head-to-head in numerous modes.
The included MyTEAM Points can be used to acquire player cards of your choice from the MyTEAM Card Marketplace.
MyCAREER
The MyCAREER storyline in NBA 2K20 follows the lives of Cole Anthony and Zion Williamson as they declare for the draft and begin their professional careers. The story is told through cutscenes featuring real-life footage of the two players, as well as interviews with NBA stars past and present. While the story is engaging, it does feel a bit rushed at times and does not always flow smoothly from one scene to the next. NBA 2K20 also introduces a new gameplay mechanic called Takeovers. Takeovers allow players to temporarily boost their attributes in certain areas for a limited time. For example, a player with a takeover in shooting will be able to make more shots than usual, while a player with a takeover in playmaking will have better vision and court awareness. This mechanic adds an extra layer of strategy to the game and can be used to turn the tide of a close matchup.
Gameplay
The gameplay in NBA 2K20 is mostly the same as the gameplay in the previous games in the series. There have been some minor changes to the controls and the player movements, but nothing major. The biggest change to the gameplay is the addition of the new defensive modifier. This allows players to better control their defenders when they are on defense.
The other major change to the gameplay is the addition of signatures shots for certain players. These are essentially pre- programmed shots that will look exactly like the player’s real-life signature shot. This is a nice addition, but it doesn’t really change the gameplay all that much.
Graphics and Visuals
The graphics and visuals in NBA 2K20 are very similar to those in NBA 2K19. There have been some minor improvements, but nothing major. The game still looks great and runs smoothly on all platforms.
Game Modes
NBA 2K20 has all of the standard game modes that you would expect from a basketball video game, including: MyCareer, MyTeam, Blacktop, Play Now, Playoffs, and others. In addition to these standard modes, there are also a few new game modes: MyGM 2.0 and MyLEAGUE Online.
MyGM 2.0 is an update to the popular MyGM mode from previous games in the series. In this mode, you take on the role of a GM for an NBA team. You will be responsible for building your team through trades, free agency, and the draft. You will also need to manage your budget and make sure that your team is profitable. This mode is very in-depth and should keep you busy for many hours.
MyLEAGUE Online is a new online mode that lets you create or join an online league with up to 30 other players from around the world. In this mode, you can play regular season games, playoffs games, and even All-Star games against other online players. This mode should be great for fans of online gaming who want to compete against other players from around the world.
NBA 2K20 Review
NBA 2K20 is a basketball simulation video game developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports. It is the 21st installment in the NBA 2K franchise and the successor to NBA 2K19. It was released on September 6, 2019, for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Positives
NBA 2K20 is story driven, with an interesting and engaging plot. The graphics and soundtrack are both amazing, and the game play is fluid and fun. NBA 2K20 is definitely worth buying!
Negatives
2K20’s MyCareer is an abysmal black hole of microtransactions, poor writing, and cringey voice acting. It’s a mode that will leave a bad taste in your mouth – or at least, it did for me. I spent about five minutes tolerating the opening cutscene before I bailed out and decided to never come back. In its current state, MyCareer is not worth your time.
Conclusion
After taking everything into consideration, we believe that NBA 2K20 is definitely worth buying if you’re a fan of the series or basketball games in general. Not only does it improve upon the already great mechanics of previous games, but it also includes a plethora of new features and game modes that will keep you hooked for hours on end.
