Who is in the NHL playoffs this year? Here’s a look at the teams that are still in contention for the Stanley Cup.
NHL Playoffs
The NHL playoffs are an annual tournament that takes place after the NHL regular season. The playoffs determine which team will win the Stanley Cup, which is the most coveted trophy in hockey. The playoffs also give fans the chance to see their favorite players and teams compete at a higher level than during the regular season.
Eastern Conference
The Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) is one of two conferences of the NHL, the other being the Western Conference. Both conferences are made up of 16 teams, organized into two divisions each.
The regular season schedule for each team is 82 games, with 41 home games and 41 away games. Each team plays every team in its own conference and teams in the other conference twice, once at home and once on the road.
The top three teams in each division automatically qualify for the playoffs (for a total of six playoff spots), while the remaining two spots are determined by wild-card standings. The division winners then occupy seeded positions 1–3 (based on regular-season record) in their conference, while the wild-card qualifiers fill seeded positions 4 and 5.
The playoff bracket is then set as follows:
seed#1 vs. seed#4
seed#2 vs. seed#3
winner of 1–4 series vs. winner of 2–3 series (semi-finals/conference finals)
winner of previous series (conference championship)
Western Conference
The National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs are an elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the winner of the Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. Eight teams from each of the two conferences qualify for the playoffs. The conference quarter-finals are best-of-five series; all subsequent rounds are best-of-seven. The two conference champions will play each other in the final round, known as the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Western Conference playoff bracket is constituted as follows:
The first and second place teams in each division earn a playoff berth, with the next six best teams in each conference also qualifying regardless of divisional alignment. Seeds 1–3 play against lower seeded wild card qualifiers while seeds 4 and 5 face off against each other. In the second round, seed 1 plays against the lowest remaining seed while seed 2 takes on the other winner from round one and so on.
Stanley Cup Playoffs
The National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs are an elimination tournament held after the conclusion of the regular season to determine the winner of the Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. Eight teams from each of the two conferences qualify for the playoffs. The final round of the playoffs, the Stanley Cup Finals, is played between the conference champions.

The first two rounds have been full of upsets and close games, and we can expect more of the same in Round 3.
So, who is in the NHL playoffs this year?
In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Bruins will face off against the Carolina Hurricanes.
This will be a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference Final, which the Bruins won in seven games.
The other Eastern Conference matchup will see the Columbus Blue Jackets take on the Boston Bruins.
The Blue Jackets are fresh off of an upset victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, while the Bruins swept the Philadelphia Flyers in Round 2.
In the Western Conference, things are a bit more wide open.
The San Jose Sharks will take on the Colorado Avalanche, while the St. Louis Blues will face off against either the Dallas Stars or Nashville Predators.
The other side of the bracket will see either the Calgary Flames or Winnipeg Jets take on either the Vegas Golden Knights or San Jose Sharks.
So there you have it! These are all of the teams that are in Stanley Cup Playoffs this year. Be sure to tune in for all of the action!
Stanley Cup Final
The NHL playoffs are down to the final four teams vying for a spot in the Stanley Cup Final. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, Vegas Golden Knights, and Winnipeg Jets all have a chance at hockey’s ultimate prize. Who will come out on top?
Round 1
Before the Stanley Cup Final begins, the NHL Playoffs first enter the Round 1 stage. The Round 1 stage of the NHL Playoffs is a best-of-seven series between each of the qualifying teams in order to determine which teams will advance to the next round. In order for a team to win a best-of-seven series, that team must be the first to win four games.
The first two games of each best-of-seven series are played at the home arena of the team with the better regular season record, while the remaining games (if necessary) are played at the home arena of the other team.
During Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, there are a total of 16 teams that compete against one another in eight different best-of-seven series’.
Round 2
After an action-packed first round, the Stanley Cup playoffs are down to just eight teams. In the Western Conference, the Nashville Predators will take on the Winnipeg Jets, while the Vegas Golden Knights will face off against the San Jose Sharks. In the East, it will be the Tampa Bay Lightning vs.
The Boston Bruins and the Washington Capitals vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The second round of the playoffs is always an exciting time, as the matchups are usually very close. This year is no different, as all four of these series could go either way. Who will come out on top and make it to the conference finals? We will have to wait and see!
Round 3
The third round of the NHL playoffs is upon us, with four teams left vying for the Stanley Cup.
Each conference has two representatives remaining, with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars representing the East, and the Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche coming out of the West.
Interestingly, all four teams left standing are from the southern half of the United States.
The first series gets underway on Saturday, with Game 1 taking place in Edmonton between the Lightning and Stars.
The winner of that series will move on to face either the Golden Knights or Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Final.
