WWE’s History
WWE’s history began in 1952 with the foundation of the Capitol Wrestling Corporation Ltd. by Jess McMahon and Toots Mondt in Washington, D.C. In 1953, the company launched the first ever “Wide World Wrestling” TV show which was broadcast on more than 50 stations across the United States.
The company rapidly grew and began running live events in various towns and cities across America. The company’s popularity increased exponentially after they signed a deal with the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) in 1955 to broadcast their live events on prime time television.
The company then took on the name of World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) after McMahon and Mondt left the business to join hands with Vince McMahon Sr. In 1963, Vincent K. McMahon established his own version of WWWF which came to be known as World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF). However, it only lasted for a year as it was unable to keep up with WWF’s success.
In 1982, Vincent K. McMahon Sr.’s son, Vincent K. McMahon Jr., bought out his father’s company and renamed it World Wrestling Federation (WWF). The younger McMahon then started expanding WWF by acquiring other wrestling promotions such as Georgia Championship Wrestling, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, World Class Championship Wrestling, and much more.
This helped WWF become the largest wrestling promotion in the world and resulted in Vince McMahon Jr. becoming a billionaire by Forbes’ estimate in 2018.
