What is baseball?
Baseball is a sport that is typically played between two teams of nine players each. The aim of the game is to score runs by hitting a ball and then running round a series of bases before the opposing team can get the ball and get you out. The game is played on a diamond-shaped field and there are typically three outs per inning.
Origins of baseball
Professional baseball traces its origins back to the mid-19th century. Baseball as we know it today is thought to have originated from a game called “rounders” which was popular in England and Ireland. Rounders is a game that is still played today, and it is thought to be the direct ancestor of baseball. The first recorded game of baseball was played in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1846, and the first professional team was formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1869.
Baseball quickly became popular in the United States, and by the early 20th century, it had spread to other countries including Japan, Cuba, and South Korea. Today, baseball is played all over the world, and there are professional leagues in many countries. The highest level of competition is the World Series, which is played between the champions of Major League Baseball in the United States and the champions of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan.
How is baseball played?
baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of nine players each, who take turns batting and fielding. The batting team attempts to score runs by hitting a ball that is thrown by the fielding team with a bat, and then running counter-clockwise around a set of four bases: first, second, third, and home plate. A run is scored when the player advances around the bases and returns to home plate. The teams switch between batting and fielding whenever the fielding team records threeouts. One turn batting for each team constitutes an inning. A game is composed of nine innings, and the team with the greater number of runs at the end of the game wins.
Baseball has no clock, although most games end in the ninth inning. Baseball evolved from older bat-and-ball games already being played in England by the mid-18th century
