The number of players on the field in baseball varies depending on the league. In general, most leagues allow for nine players on the field at one time.
MLB Rule
The Official Baseball Rules do not specify how many defensive players must be on the field when the pitch is delivered. In the Major League Baseball, the rule is that each team must have nine players on the field at the start of each half-inning.
Inning
An inning is completed when each team has batted in its respective half of the inning and the third out is made. If the batting team scores before the third out, the inning is not over. The batting team continues to hit until it records three outs or until it scores enough runs to win the game (see below). When three outs are recorded, the teams switch roles for the next half-inning: the former fielding team takes its turn at bat while the former batting team takes its turn in the field. In baseball statistics, each inning pitched (abbreviated IP) by a pitcher—innings in which he throws the ball to batters—is credited as one foundation of his pitching statistics; and each run scored against him by opposing batters while he was pitching (an earned run) is debited from his totals.

In baseball, each team is allowed to have a maximum of nine players on the field at one time. There are exceptions to this rule, however, as teams are allowed to substitute players during the course of a game. For example, a team may pinch hit for a player who is struggling at the plate or put in a relief pitcher if the starter is pitching poorly.

If a team has more than nine players available, they may substitute freely between innings. However, once a player leaves the game he cannot re-enter, with exception of the catcher. A player may re-enter the game once per inning as long as he replaces another player who has already been substituted for and occupies the same position in the batting order.
Professional Rule
In baseball, there are nine fielding positions. The fielding positions are categorized as follows: pitcher, catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, shortstop, left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder. pitchers and catchers play in the infield, while the other seven positions play in the outfield.

Substitutions
Number of Players: A regulation game of baseball is played with nine players on each team fielding (defensive positions) and batting (offensive positions) in an alternating sequence. Although substitutions are allowed, each player for each team must play a minimum of three defensive innings in the field and bats once in every inning when his or her turn comes up to hit.
A pinch hitter may be used for any player in the batting lineup, but once a player has been replaced in the lineup, that player may not return to the game. In other words, if a player is taken out for a pinch hitter in the fourth inning, that player can no longer play the field or bat again.
