Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors are an American professional basketball team based in San Francisco. The Warriors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. Founded in 1946 in Philadelphia, the Warriors relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1962 and took the city’s name, before changing its geographic moniker to Golden State in 1971. They play their home games at the Chase Center.

The Warriors won their first NBA championship in Philadelphia in 1956, led by Hall of Fame guard Paul Arizin, center Neil Johnston, and forward Tom Gola. This was followed by semi-successful periods from 1963 to 1966, with five straight playoff appearances behind star players Rick Barry and Nate Thurmond; 1977 to 1980 with early NBA All-Star World B. Free; and 1987 to 1994 with advance scouts Bob Lanier and Mitch Richmond leading the way. After a period of rebuilding following a Finals appearance in 1976 that resulted in a second-round exit for rookie coach Al Attles and limited resources for owner Franklin Mieuli, the team returned to prominence under head coach Don Nelson from 1988 to 1995, making five conference semifinals, three conference finals, and one NBA Finals appearance during that time behind All-Star point guard Tim Hardaway Sr., young small forwards Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond, and center/power forward Latrell Sprewell. In 2000–01 after trading away All-Star power forward Kevin Garnett during his rookie year for future Hall of Famers Stephon Marburyand Keith Van Horn (which were instantly released), Andrew Langand Terrell Brandon,[citation needed]an aging Head Coach Flip Saunderswas replaced by journeyman Sidney Loweand subsequently went through nine consecutive losing seasons from 2001–10; this was highlighted by intense media scrutiny on Garnett’s much younger replacement Carmelo Anthonyin 2005–06 due to his poor work ethic on defense which led to his brief but infamous tenure on the team being widely panned as one of history’s biggest draft busts.[citation needed]

After more than a decade without a playoff berth (a franchise record 13 years),[citation needed]the 2010–11 season finally saw them return after signing power forward Amar’e Stoudemireto a five-year deal during his 2010 free agency.[citation needed] That same season saw them make another free agency splash by signing shooting guard Raymond Felton([[List of New York Knicks seasons|2010–11 Knicks)to a three-year deal.[citation needed] Now playing at full strength following gutting their previous squad,[citation needed]they went on to win their first ever Atlantic Division title as well as their first ever#1 playoff seed with an Amar’e Stoudemire-led roster.[citation needed] In addition they notched victories over perennial playoff teams such as LeBron Jamesand Dwyane Wade’s Miami Heat,[citation needed]as well as perennial championship contenders such as Kobe Bryants Los Angeles Lakers.[citation needed]
