Irving was born on March 23, 1992, in Melbourne, Australia to American parents Drederick and Elizabeth Irving. He has two older sisters, Asia and London, and a younger sister, Andromeda. His father, Drederick, played college basketball at Boston University before playing professionally in Australia. Kyrie was named after his father’s favourite player growing up: former Celtics point guard Kyrie Andrew Irving Sr., who died in 1993 from an accidental overdose of pain medication at age 31.

In his first season in the NBA, Kyrie Irving was named the Rookie of the Year. He averaged 22.5 points per game, which was the second highest among all rookies. He also shot an impressive 47.1% from the field and 39.9% from three-point range.
Kawhi Leonard
Kawhi Leonard was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in the 2011 NBA Draft but was immediately traded to the San Antonio Spurs. Leonard played sparingly his rookie season, but he really came into his own in his sophomore season. By his third season, Leonard had established himself as one of the best players in the league and was named the defensive player of the year. He was also named to the All-Star team for the first time in his career.

Leonard was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 15th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. During his rookie season, he quickly emerged as one of the best players on the Spurs, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He helped lead the Spurs to a 67-15 record and a berth in the Western Conference Finals. In the playoffs, he averaged 12.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as the Spurs lost in five games to the eventual champion Golden State Warriors. Leonard was one of only three rookies (joining Spur teammate Kyle Anderson and Minnesota Timberwolves’ Andrew Wiggins) to average at least 10 points and 4 rebounds in the playoffs that year, and was subsequently named Rookie of the Year for his performance.
