The Bob Jones Patriots have a long and storied tradition of success on the hardwood. With 9 state championships and 21 region championships, the Patriots have cemented their place as one of the premier high school basketball programs in Alabama. The team’s success is a direct result of the commitment and dedication of its coaches, players, and support staff.

Early Success

The Bob Jones basketball team was founded in 1900, and it didn’t take long for the team to find success. In its first season, the team won the state championship The following year, the team went undefeated and won the National Championship The team would go on to win five more National Championships in the next decade.

The Championships

Since the school’s founding in 1927, Bob Jones University has celebrated many athletic successes. In basketball, the men’s team has won seventeen regular-season conference championships eleven conference tournament championships, and made twenty-two appearances in the NAIA National Tournament The women’s team has also had much success, winning six regular-season conference championships and five conference tournament championships. In total, Bob Jones University teams have won fifty-six conference championships and appeared in thirty-seven national tournaments.

The rich tradition of excellence that is Bob Jones basketball is built on the backs of the many Great players who have donned the purple and white over the years. From All-State players to Mr. Basketball winners, Bob Jones has had some of the best talent in the state of Alabama grace its hardwood. Here are just a few of the many standouts in Bob Jones history.

Willie Davis – A 6’7″ forward/center, Davis was a three-year starter for Bob Jones and helped lead the team to a state championship in his senior year. He was named First Team All-State and was also named Mr. Basketball for the state of Alabama in 1974. He went on to have a successful career at Auburn University before being drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 1978.

Phillip Livas – A 5’10” guard, Livas was a four-year starter for Bob Jones and was a key player on teams that won back-to-back State Championships in his junior and senior years. He was named First Team All-State in both his junior and senior seasons and was also named Mr. Basketball for the state of Alabama in his senior year. Livas went on to have a successful career at Louisiana State University before being drafted by the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets in 1992.

Jeff Hodge – A 6’1″ guard, Hodge was a three-year starter for Bob Jones and helped lead the team to a state championship in his senior year. He was named First Team All-State and was also named Mr. Basketball for the state of Alabama in 1984. Hodge went on to have a successful career at Clemson University before being drafted by the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets in 1988.

Who have instilled in our players the importance of hard work teamwork, and sportsmanship. These are the coaches who have built our legacy of success.

The fans of Bob Jones basketball are some of the most diehard and passionate in the country. They travel well, and always bring a great atmosphere to the arena. The team has a great home court advantage and the fans are a big part of that.

The Rivalries

During coach Bob Jones’ time at Bob Jones high school the Basketball Program enjoyed a level of success that was unrivaled in Alabama high school history. Not only did his teams win an unprecedented 11 State Championships but they also established a true dynasty – winning 3 consecutive state titles on 3 occasions. Along the way, they racked up an amazing record of 885 wins and only 148 losses.

Of course, with that kind of success comes a healthy dose of rivalry. In addition to their longstanding rivalry with crosstown rival Butler high school the Bob Jones teams also had heated rivalries with other top programs around the state such as Sidney Lanier, G.W. Carver, and Mobile Murphy.

Coach Jones’ teams always rose to the occasion when playing their biggest rivals. In fact, against their 5 biggest rivals during his tenure, Coach Jones’ teams had a combined record of 145 wins and only 20 losses – an astounding winning percentage of 88%.

Those numbers speak for themselves – Bob Jones high school truly was the powerhouse of Alabama High School basketball during Coach Jones’ time at the helm.
