This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame To celebrate, we’re taking a look back at some of the most iconic moments and people in the history of the sport.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was established in 1959 by Lee Williams, a former President of the Amateur Athletic Union The Williamses bought the home whereNaismith invented the game in 1891, and had it restored to look as it did during his time there. The original house is adjacent to a larger Basketball Museum built later on; both are open to visitors year-round free of charge.

The Hall of Fame was founded in 1959 by Springfield College The first class of inductees included players George Mikan Bob Cousy, and Bill Russell Since then, there have been over 300 inductees. Of those inducted, about 200 are players. The rest are made up of coaches, referees, executives, and other contributors to the game.

There are several events that take place every year at the Hall of Fame These events include the Enshrinement Ceremony, which happens every September and honors the newest inductees; the Tip-Off Classic, a college Basketball Tournament played every November; and Hoophall Weekends, when various High School and college basketball games are played throughout January.

One of the most popular events is the induction ceremony itself. This takes place on Friday Night before the Tip-Off Classic game on Saturday morning. During this ceremony, each inductee gives a speech about their career in basketball and what the Hall of Fame means to them personally.

The Hall of Fame was founded in 1959 by Robert H. Johnson, a former athletic director at Colby College The Basketball Hall of Fame’s founding Board of Trustees included fourteen people: four men who had been involved with Professional Basketball as owners or promoters (Johnson, Walter Brown, Corky Booth, and Howard Cann), three who had been important at the collegiate level (Harold Uris, Elgin Baylor, and Edward Steitz), one each from the high school (Claude Red Cross) and AAU ranks (Everett Shelton), and four members of the general public (Richard Ensley Jr., Francis J. Haas Jr., Edward WGaming IIlustrated Greene Jr., and William Hirsch).

The programs sponsored by the Basketball Hall of Fame are many and varied. They include educational initiatives such as “Hoop Dreams”, which provides financial assistance to promising young players from disadvantaged backgrounds so that they can continue their education; “Leadership Development”, which helps young people to develop their skills in leadership and communication; “Coaches vs. Cancer”, which raises money for Cancer Research ” ethics training for referees; and seminars on sports management for high school students. The Hall of Fame also sponsors an annual awards ceremony at which the winners of the various college basketball player of the year awards are honored.

Hours and Admission
The Hall of Fame is open daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors (65+), $9 for students (18+ with valid ID), $5 for youth (ages 6-17), and children under 5 are free.

There are a number of ways to experience the Hall of Fame including guided tours, self-guided tours, and group tours. Guided tours are led by knowledgeable docents and are available Monday through Saturday at 10:30am and 1:30pm. Group tours must be scheduled in advance by calling 413-781-6500.
Giftshop & Cafe
After your visit, be sure to stop by the giftshop! The shop carries a wide selection of basketball memorabilia apparel, books, DVDs, and more. The Café at the Hall serves up lunch daily from 11:30am-2:00pm.

Media

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inducted its Class of 2020 on Saturday night, and the group was celebrated in a special ceremony held virtually. The 10-member class was headlined by Kobe Bryant who was posthumously inducted after his tragic death in January. Other members of the class included Tamika Catchings, Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan and Kim Mulkey.

The ceremony began with a live performance from NBA Star Candace Parker who sang “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.” Parker was followed by a video montage remembering the accomplishments of the 2020 class.

Many of the speeches throughout the night were emotional, particularly those remembering Bryant. His widow, Vanessa Bryant, delivered a powerful speech in which she recounted her husband’s love for the game of basketball She also spoke about how much he loved his family and thanked everyone for their support during this difficult time.

Garnett gave an impassioned speech in which he called himself “the ugliest player in the history of basketball” and spoke about how he used that to his advantage on the court. Duncan spoke about how he never imagined he would be standing on that stage when he first started playing basketball as a child. And Catchings spoke about how grateful she is to have had a 20-year career in the WNBA.

The night ended with a touching tribute to Bryant from Michael Jordan who called him “a dear friend” and “little brother.” Jordan spoke about how much Bryant admired and respected him, and how he will always be remembered as one of the greatest players in the game.
