Introduction

The 1960s was a decade of great change for the NBA. The league expanded from nine teams to fourteen, and the game itself evolved with the introduction of the shot clock and the adoption of the now-ubiquitous games of 82 regular season games followed by a postseason tournament.

In this time of great change, there were also some remarkably consistent performers. Below is our All-Decade Team for the 1960s.

The 1960s All-Decade Team

The NBA’s All-Decade Team of the 1960s was announced in 1970. The team was selected by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.

The team included three players who had been retired for less than a year: Bob Pettit, Bill Russell and Oscar Robertson All three were still active in other aspects of basketball; Pettit was working as a broadcaster, Russell was coaching the Seattle SuperSonics and Robertson was serving as special assistant to the commissioner.

The other six members of the team were all active players. Jerry West Dick Van Arsdale, and John Havlicek were selected from the Western Conference while Willis Reed, Walt Bellamy, and Jerry Lucas represented the East.

--Jerry West West was one of the best scorers in NBA history averaging 27 points per game during his career. He was also a clutch performer, earning the nickname “Mr. Clutch” for his late-game heroics. West was named Finals MVP in 1969 despite being on the losing team.

-John Havlicek: Havlicek is considered one of the best all-around players in NBA history capable of playing multiple positions on both ends of the court. He averaged 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists per game during his career and won eight championships with the Boston Celtics
