Early History of St. Augustine Baseball
St. Augustine has a long and rich history in baseball. The first recorded game played in the city was in 1888 between the St. Augustine Athletic Club and a team of local residents. In the early 1900s, the St. Augustine Saints were one of the most successful semi-professional teams in Florida, winning multiple championships.
After a few decades of dormancy, baseball began to make a comeback in St. Augustine in the 1970s. A new minor league team the Saint Johns Giants, began play in 1971 and were quickly joined by another team, the Saint Johns Mariners, in 1972. The following year, 1973, saw the return of semi-Pro Baseball to St. Augustine as the Saints once again took to the field.
The 1980s were a Golden Age for baseball in St. Augustine as three different minor league teams called the city home. The Giants (1981-82), Saints (1982-83), and Havana Cubans (1984) all called St. Augustine Stadium home at one point or another during this decade.
Since then, there has been a steady decline in professional baseball in St. Augustine culminating with the departure of the last Minor League team, the Saint Johns JAXX, in 2008. However, there is still a strong amateur baseball scene in the city with multiple teams competing at various levels.
The Golden Age of St. Augustine Baseball
The Golden Age of St. Augustine Baseball was a time when the sport mattered more to the city than any other time in its history. From the early days of the Saint Augustine baseball club in the 1870s to the heyday of Professional Baseball in the first two decades of the twentieth century, baseball was a central part of life in Florida’s oldest city.
During this time, Saint Augustine was home to some of the best teams and players in the country, including Hall of Fame inductee Cap Anson. baseball games were regularly played in front of large crowds at historic Hiram Bithorn Stadium, and local newspapers devoted significant coverage to the sport.
Sadly, the Golden Age came to an end in the 1920s as Saint Augustine’s population began to decline and interest in baseball waned. Today, however, there is a growing movement to revive baseball in Saint Augustine, with a new generation of fans and players ensuring that America’s pastime will once again have a place in the nation’s oldest city.
The Post-Golden Age Era
The St. Augustine baseball team has been through ups and downs throughout its history. From its Glory Days in the late 1800s to its struggles in the post-Golden Age era, the team has had a rollercoaster ride of a history.
The late 1800s were the golden age of baseball for St. Augustine. The team was one of the best in the country, winning several championships. However, this era came to an end in the early 1900s, when the team began to struggle.
The post-Golden Age era has been a difficult one for St. Augustine baseball. The team has had trouble winning championships, and attendance has been low. However, there have been some bright spots during this time period, such as the team’s recent run of success in the Florida State League.
